As the Fall semester concludes, it is only right to think of the four long years I have endured here at the University of Connecticut. Through my educational enrichment, I will have the credibility to convey the signifigance of continuing one’s education. College has had a powerful influence on my mental, physical, and spiritual aspirations. The inevitable development that has ingrained into my mind has given me the desire to want to use my experiences as a platform to showcase the resources and opportunities available to a diverse array of students. Since my sophomore year, I have looked diligently into this program constantly inquiring about why I needed to become apart of this program.

Until, when two summers ago, the Student Support Services program offered me a chance to visit South Africa for a month. From the second I stepped on African soil, a history that is not taught in school was exposed to me. There I was able to embrace a culture that I was unfamiliar with, and learn from a group of people about the lives they live and the way they live them. Studying abroad became a climactic time in my life where the world became my classroom. A reality that wasn’t my own was shown to me, and a nation who underwent an injustice, called the Apartheid, expressed nothing less than optimism and sheer resilience. Volunteering in a non-profit organization called The Triangle Project, gave me insight on how vital it is to combat the oppression that marginalized groups face, and to be a valiant pillar for victims of …show more content…
The reality was, I had to withdraw from that semester, and explain to the people who had such high expectations of me, as to why I came back unsuccessful. Throughout months of self reflection and genuine analyzation, I have come to terms with that semester and most importantly have learned from it. It has made me stronger, and rooted me in being a resilient individual. I have used my experience as a way to help others realize, one should always reach out for help, no matter what.
Moving forward, this semester I am currently undergoing an internship with the UConn Connects program, mentoring students who are in need of assistance in finding and maintaining a suitable balance in their life. By undergoing this venture, I solidified my desire to continue advocating for students to excel in school and conquer life skills, such as time management, stress management, motivational maintenance. Every week, I meet with five students for about an hour to discuss their progress in school, and discuss any issues that they are facing, hoping to better them holistically especially

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…

When I interviewed with Mount Holyoke College, the Associate Director of the Frances Perkins Scholar program, Nichole Reynolds, shared with me, “Attending this school can be a transformative experience if you allow it to be.” The words that she spoke were the guiding force behind the ways in which I approached my junior year. The 2016-2017 school year has been the most transformative year of my academic life thus far. Indeed, I stepped out of my cocoon and forced myself to stretch; no matter how uncomfortable or the amount of fear that I felt, I pushed towards new experiences that helped to construct the person I was becoming. First, after much consideration, I officially declared my self-design major in Black Geographies with the support of my academic advising team.…

My Personal Goal Statement Every day I wake up, I ask myself how I can make a difference. This question has helped shape my personal values and principles and directed my path into the nursing field. Growing up in West Africa and witnessing firsthand the sufferings and impoverishment of the people around me, I developed a sense of compassion and willingness to make a difference and help alleviate their sufferings and put a smile on their faces. Healthcare delivery and poverty are two major underlying factors in the challenges faced in Africa, thus, when I got an opportunity to come into the United States, it was my golden ticket to finally give back to the community and make a difference. This led me into the nursing field; I started out as a Certified Nurse Assistant.…

“As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” According to Nelson Mandela, we should all be restless until everyone is equal. During the past semester, I have strived to help impoverished students receive an education equal to the education given to children in private schools. As a result, I have acquired an expansive knowledge regarding injustice and have grown as a person. For my service work this semester, I volunteered at Kellom Elementary.…

Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…
