Statement Of Purpose For A High School Degree Equivalency Program

I graduated from Kean University with a degree in psychology and once I graduated I started my journey wondering where it would take me. Knowing that whatever field I chose I would want to use my understanding, compassion, and motivation to help others. I had no idea it would lead me to teaching. I started volunteering at TRACE in their high school diploma equivalency program over a year ago and that is when I realized, this is where I belong. There is a quote by Harold Whitman, a philosopher and educator, who sums it up perfectly, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” There are many reasons to why I want to become a …show more content…
However, my challenge with equity and access came later in life. During my junior year of college I experienced a series of difficult things all at once. One of the things that occurred was my mom getting laid off and me almost getting kicked out of school for nonpayment. There was a moment where I dwelled and could not grasp all that was going on. There is a popular idiom referring to a “light bulb” going off in your head and I remember the exact moment my “light bulb” went off. When I realized no one else was going to make this right for me but myself. Instead of being overwhelmed by everything around me, I took it one step at a time. I learned that no matter what gets thrown my way, I can and will overcome it. That year I managed to accomplish a great deal, including being able to pay my tuition and obtain the highest GPA I ever

Each person has his or her individual path to follow, no two paths are exactly the same; but, every now and then, paths interweave and people construct bonds with each other. In the case of Sonny and his brother, the narrator, in James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, their paths were parallel with one another until they grew up. Sonny left the slums of Harlem, aspiring to become a musician, while his brother settled in Harlem and became a teacher. Although the narrator and his brother ended up with completely different lives, the narrator being a family man with a teaching job and Sonny, an ex-convict playing jazz at a club, are ironically more similar than they are portrayed.…

I have known since I was younger that I wanted to help children in some way. I began my degree in Psychology while serving in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, I realized I had a passion for not only leading, but educating. I thrived during the times I could give lectures, presentations, and present new content to my division. Once I left the Navy, I realized that teaching older children, middle school and high school ages, was something I wanted to seriously consider.…

My mother always told me “the only thing you have that no one can take away from you is your education.” As a student, I was taught about vocation as well, which is one’s higher purpose in life. In my own words, college is just the epicenter of the big “grind” of life. The decision to be a teacher in 2016 comes from my belief and desire to impact lives in the best way possible; to use methods unconventional, yet very effective to a child’s attention span that I once had. It is my goal to become the teacher that the children won’t say I hate school or never looking forward to the next day of class.…

Autobiography Thinking back, there have been many different influences that have helped shaped and guide me towards the field of teaching. There have been five instructors that have helped me push towards a profession in Secondary History education. My sixth grade teacher, my high school history teacher, my high school principal, and two of my grandparents have introduced me and interested me in the field of education but more specifically in the discipline of history/social science. Along with individuals, school organizations, sports, and 4-H have also played a role in my education. Reflecting on my past teachers, in sixth grade I remember gaining my first interest when my teacher would bring history to life.…

While searching for something to do this summer I wanted to find something that I could gain some very useful experiences from, so when I received an email informing me about a fellowship in the south working to improve schools I was ecstatic. Participating in this fellowship would mean I am taking the leadership pathway and that is the pathway I was looking to be a part of because I think it is probably the best pathway to gain experience that is easily transferable into the work place. The work you do in an internship is very much meant to be work that gives you direct experience in the work environment, rather than other pathways which may give you new things to think about and consider but may not give you necessary skills in a field. I am studying Psychology and that opens a lot of different career options after graduation and one the options I am considering is teaching. This is a great way to gain experience in education.…
