As a little five year old girl my favorite thing to do was play school. I didn’t just want to play school; I wanted to be the teacher. Individuals have many different motives to why they want to become teachers. I have known my whole life I have wanted to teach for many reasons. I have chosen this career because I love being around children, I want to be able to affect their lives in a positive way, I like the environment of a school setting, and I am able to spend time with my family while doing what I love. My favorite thing I ever did in high school was peer tutoring. I did this on three occasions. Every day of my junior year I would help in a first grade class. This was my first experience sitting in and observing an elementary teacher, and I loved it. I learned so much just being in there one hour a day. Her style of teaching is what I would like to do with my students one day. She would get her class physical involved in every activity she did. Only few times that were necessary did she have them sitting in their desks learning. The kids weren’t the only ones getting involved and having fun during the activities. In my class I want the students to learn to be kind, trustworthy, and confident. Sometimes children my get neglected at home, and that is where I want to come in. When a child is taught that those things aren’t important, they may not grow into teenagers or adults that have morals and values. This would cause them to end up like their parent and keeping the same cycle going. If I could show those children the correct way to act I could end that cycle. 2. Why did you decide to become a teacher? Both of my parents are teachers, so growing up there was one thing that I knew for sure: that I was not going to follow in their footsteps. I had dreams of dressing up and working in an office. Each person has his or her individual path to follow, no two paths are exactly the same; but, every now and then, paths interweave and people construct bonds with each other. In the case of Sonny and his brother, the narrator, in James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, their paths were parallel with one another until they grew up. Sonny left the slums of Harlem, aspiring to become a musician, while his brother settled in Harlem and became a teacher. Although the narrator and his brother ended up with completely different lives, the narrator being a family man with a teaching job and Sonny, an ex-convict playing jazz at a club, are ironically more similar than they are portrayed.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

In the summer you can find me busing tables and answering to the hangry tourists that dine at Bar Harbor Restaurant. Eight hour shifts, seven days a week, but on the occasional slow days I’d get to cut out early so my summers are still filled with adventure. Hiking uphill through the thick brush to reach the peak of Dude Mountain, where the ground meets the watercolor skies. Biking through the overpopulated wooden docks downtown, points for pedestrians (just kidding). From fishing to jumping off the docks, to camping beneath the starry skies with friends, nothing beats Alaskan Summers.…

Most people change their career decisions multiple times before they actually pick a final job, but I never had an interest in anything other than being a teacher. I have always connected with younger kids over high school or middle school children, which is why I chose to major in Early Childhood Education.
