Why I Chose Science

Improved Essays
Growing up I never showed much interest in science it was never something I cared for. It may have to do with my teaches not showing enough interest in it either. When I do start teaching I plan on making science fun and making sure everyone has a task so they are fully engaged. Children get bored really easily especially in school, so in order to keep them interested I want to include as many fun activities as I can. I do not want to be that teacher that just reads off the textbook and only shows videos that drift the children away. I also plan on using different learning styles because I understand not everyone learns the same. I believe we have to draw the students attention in all subjects because their past experience may have corrupted …show more content…
My sixth grade science teacher was too nice, which led to everyone taking advantage of him. I do not remember learning any type of science in his class. We spent most of the class time just talking with our friends or just sharing answers. I only remember doing one experiment and that was putting drops of vinegar into baking soda and reporting the data. We had done that experiment several times because he was so lost on which of his classes had done it. We later tried to build a bridge from toothpicks but no one succeed in making a complete bride. By then we all realized the teacher did not care if we did the work or not, so everyone had given up. That class taught me to always be prepared as a teacher and you have to step your foot down if you want to be heard. In seventh grade, we had small experiments like weighing different objects to see if they weighed the same intact and together. We were mostly learning about atoms and had a project where we had to create our own atom. I believe I had Hydrogen, so I created it out of a big foam ball and colored cotton balls. I later learned my school did not care much for science since they were laying off my teacher. I remember visiting a science museum in Ohio; I was more interested in everything that was not science related. In the eighth grade, I strongly disliked science, my teacher expected up to know everything she knew and the class consisted of was worksheets and …show more content…
We never did any activities or projects, it was always the same weekly vocab quizzes and jam packed powerpoint presentation no one listened to. This teacher only appealed to the students who learned that way. When the second semester came around I got a more energetic teacher who made me love science. She always switched up her lectures and had hand-on activities. As high schoolers, we did not have enough time for full on experiments but my teacher still had related activities like building a family tree. She often had open discussions with the class and shared very interesting videos that were linked to the chapters. When I moved onto physics it was a different tale, we had gone back to powerpoint and worksheets. The teacher tried to get the students interested by adding humor and stories but it was not working. We had many gravity experiments where we dropped certain object to see which would land first. I did not find them interesting because it was always the same outcome; something would land on the floor. When we switched teachers the course also shifted into solving math problems than memorizing laws. I loved this part of physics because it was very logical and there was only one answer since we were solving equations. When we would work on the problems the whole class would work together so it made sense to everyone. We had a sound wave

We taught how to engage the students to have them pay more attention and as stated previously, you do not normally lecture in a special needs classroom although it may be a higher functioning classroom. Although this differed from what we normally learned, it was very intriguing to see how the students reacted to the lecture. While most of the students participated Susan did have to redirect a few students at times when they would lay their head down or stop taking notes in their notebook. It was clear that she had to be stern and show the children that they could not play around in that…

The teacher chooses the program content, and the students (who were not consulted) adapt to it." (Freire 217) My teacher, being highly intelligent but lackluster, would simply deposit information to us straight out of the textbook as we just comply and mindlessly jot down notes via "Cornell notes" style without a single grasp of the lessons ' concepts. "Make sure you guys go home and look over your notes and relevant chapters for another weekly quiz next Monday" is a typical instruction my Chemistry AP teacher would say on a weekly basis. The class revolves around memorizing lecture materials and then regurgitating them and our teacher 's thoughts via tests, essays, etc. This is my typical Chemistry AP day.…

Every day I missed free time filled with exciting games such as seven-up and tag, forcibly sat in a room where the lights were just a bit too bright and the chairs a bit too straight, and read aloud. After an eternity of struggling through a page of words that wouldn’t stay where they were supposed to and letters that loved swapping places I went back to math class with a star sticker. The other kids in my class were jealous that I was allowed to go off and acquire stickers while they were forced to stay in class. Smiling along I pretended their jealousy was well earned, but I knew the price that came with each one. I knew…

Both my earth science teacher and my history teacher have a particular way teach, a way that no every teacher is using. They both tried to focus on the smart ones or in those who are actually trying to learn in the class to make those who didn’t care about the class fight for their grade. Considering they were both pretty tough grader, they didn’t give a chance to those who were paying attention. Although they were both exceptional with their students, I remember that both always bring treats on Fridays, so if a student answer a question right in class, the student would it get a full donut and they answer wrong they would get half a donut. In addition to this my earth science teacher always try to make his classroom to feel like a party on Mondays so he always tried to make us feel like we 're at home, he even would let you to listen music in his class, although you could only do it with one earplug the other ear was always free so could hear what he was talking about.…

Math has always been a favorite subject of mine and although I have never been the insightful mathematician, and I still struggle with abstract math problems, I always have a positive attitude toward the subject. Growing up in the elementary grades, I recall always getting good grades in math, but usually, those math problems only require the use of traditional problem solving methodologies. During that time, I loved solving math problems which involved only numbers, finishing a math problem before my classmates and also helping my fellow classmates. When I think about math in my early years, I realized how easy and uncomplicated the subject was. However, things became more challenging for me when I reached the higher elementary grades, high…

Since moving to this new area really demoralized me I didn’t want to do anything in class but put my hood up and sleep. At first I didn’t even know why I was in that class I never liked drafting and I just needed the credits. At first I would just skip all my classes and only show up to class about 2 days a week if that.…

I can recall all the details about my first math class when I can hardly catch my professor and classmates. I can understand the knowledge in math expressions, but got confused about what the abbreviations stand and even had no ideas about how to read the formula and speak out my solution—I had to focus on English rather than math. Also I do not know how to react when my professors told jokes that I can barely understand. I got so depressed with this math class and so disappointed with myself. I started to doubt myself that whether I can deal with all these…
