Being a nurse is challenging. As a nurse for almost 2 years, I’ve noticed that within one shift; my intelligence, skills, and even my right to be doing my job is constantly being challenged. I’ve learned a lot about this profession and my passion for it has grown immensely. I’ve always known I wanted to further my education by pursing a graduate degree, and since receiving my license I’ve faced momentous events that have solidified this goal.
As a brand new nurse, I found it very hard to land a job and the first offer I received I accepted with the mindset that everyone starts somewhere to get where they want to be. With frequent educational and competency opportunities within my unit, my love for this profession has grown. I find myself more intrigued in pursuing my dream of becoming a FNP with every patient I care for. I enjoy being a bedside nurse for numerous reasons. With newborn twins at home, it’s a breath of fresh air to be given an opportunity daily to care for those in need, critically think through care plans that would best fit my patients, as well as selflessly giving my all as a healthcare provider. There are days where I am still faced with the challenges of advocating for my patients by questioning a well experienced physician’s orders, and there are days where I have to find the best way to explain to a family member that in their current setting I may know what’s best for their mom, dad, or grandparent. My daily interactions with my patients, management of their health, and opportunities to educate and nurse them back to health is what drives my passion to become an advanced practice nurse. I am ready to take on the responsibility of guiding the health of my patients, providing stability, and quality continuity of care. Through research, I’ve learned that with the role of a FNP I will be able to assess, diagnose, refer, and order treatments in addition to providing other health care services.
