Personal Purpose Statement: My personal purpose statement for my time here at Queen’s as discovered in Journal One, “I aspire to appreciate a meaningful, self respecting and challenging journey with the Queen’s Commerce Program in which I am passionate about the opportunities for my personal growth and development of connections to my school, professors and colleagues, while expanding my knowledge and improving my personal skills, which I will carry forward as a starting point for my future,” remains an honest expression of my intentions. My experiences within the program to date have enhanced my personal awareness of these values and goals by having the opportunity to grow independently. Specifically, I am appreciating the challenges, as they …show more content…
Communication in teams is a learning experience. Working with unique personalities all with different levels of abilities and techniques for communication of deadlines, task progress, use of agendas and willingness of expressing difficulties and emotions is often conflicting and difficult to reach a common understanding. This often lead to conversations of these issues needed to be had, but as everyone had different ideas how they should be executed, it was not necessary to advocate for my way, but to inquire and have the conversation to understand the group members perspective and values. From this course the most applicable best practice I will certainly use is the difficult conversation process that aided in these situations. Entering the program, I understood that teamwork would be a component, but now I truly can acknowledge my underestimation of teamwork, as each course requires numerous group submissions. A further surprise is the social loafing that occurs on a team if there is low emotional intelligence. All Commerce students achieved to be accepted, and now it is evident some are accepting the backseat in their education. A corresponding surprise due to the level of group work and my inability to be passive in my learning is the amount of “free time” in university that is seen in the course schedule and rumoured around high school to expect in University, which is realistically significantly less than expected. At times, “social” activities is the time spent with colleagues focused on course deliverables and breaks are remembering to enjoy a meal, ideally with friends. This easily could just reflect my personality, as I am driven to succeed within this

With the student evaluations, the students already paid to get into the university. It was not given to them, like it is in other countries. The students paid to attend the college or university, they need and should know which professors would help them achieve their goals according to their way of learning. This is why student evaluations are important, it shows which professors are underachieving and which are performing exponentially. Although there is an ever present threat of a student writing a bad review, if the majority of the class is writing great reviews, it will show if that student was actually slacking in the class.…

William Hiss, the lead author of a study involving the tests true importance in college said that the “tests are largely a speed processing test….They’re not an intelligence test, and there are many, many students who may be brilliant, may be very talented, but are not successfully measured by speed processing” (Whitaker). Students become so overwhelmed with their limited time that they are unable to accurately complete the test like they would if they were not timed. Likewise, due to recent studies college entrance exams are found to be biased to the general student population. The discrepancy discovered between female and male test scores is unlike the student’s usual performance in school. After observing scores from both genders, researches found that “though female high school students and female college students usually outperform male high school students and male college students (grade-wise), female students score poorly on exams when compared to their male peers” (“Are College Entrance Exams Flawed?”).…
