My Personal Philosophy of Student Affairs My career working with college students who seek for their professions in Korea and my own experience during college have helped me to shape my personal philosophy of student affairs. I define student affairs to be a guiding lamp that shows people the way they follow and help them find their path effectively regardless of being on the right track or being lost. People mostly consider the higher education institution as an academic center, so learning primarily occurs in the classroom between professors and students. However, a goal of the higher education institution: a successful learning can be reached with an aid of enriched student affairs work. I would define the role of student affairs work to be an advisor, supporter, mentor and resource. For instance, when students can hardly reach their professors for academic purpose, they can knock the door of the advising office on campus in order to get a prompt service. In case that teen’s mom college student has difficulty in continuing her college education, she is affordable to get a support from the organization which is called “Women’s center”. For students who have learning issues caused by certain kinds of disabilities, mental health, and so on, various student affairs are applicable such as tutoring center, writing center, and counseling center. I believe that earlier intervention is the best policy in education. As a professional of student affairs, I would like to inspire and motivate students to search for the opportunities to have a better and suitable solution aligned with situation. To do that, I will help students realize their potential not only academically, but also to be a successful citizen who can fulfill sound commitment and valuable contributions to the society. I am sure that meeting the needs of each student is not easy. However, the duty of a student affairs professional is to listen to student’s voice and to learn about the individuals who I work with so as to come up with the suitable solutions as a mentor and a supporter.
