My Personal Philosophy of Education

It is customary that on New Year’s Eve, we make New Year resolution. The fact is that we are making a set of guideline that we want to live by. These are motives that we seek to achieve. In a similar way, teachers live by philosophy. This essay focuses on my personal philosophy of education. It unfolds the function of philosophy in a teacher’s life, my view on the purpose of education, the student teacher- relationship and the philosophy which influences my views expressed. All of these beliefs make up my personal philosophy of education.

Education is not limited to the classroom. Education is life and not a preparation for life. (unknown source of quote). Persons should be educated on fundamentals that will make the human resource one that is diverse as well as about their society. Education about their society may lead to the reduction of social tensions caused by economic inequalities; it may also ease racial tensions. The philosopher of education, Jean Jacques Rousseau (unknown date of quotation), stated that men are shaped by education and I agree. He went further to explain that persons are educated through experience and reason, and this enables them to care and respect others.
As a student of the university the purpose of my education is to be qualified in my field of study thus enabling me to achieve greatness. When I matriculate to the working world, I will be able to provide for myself and my family and become self sufficient. This leads to the development of a civilized society that is responsible and thoughtful.
“Teaching and learning are to opposite sides of the same coin” says Farrant (1987). Teaching is the process that facilitates learning. I believe that teachers should be facilitators of learning rather than dictators. They should guide students, provide access to information, rather than act as the primary source of information. The responsibility of teachers is to teach their students how to think, not what to think.
