Personal Narrative: My Personal Moral Influences

Superior Essays
Many researchers say that a child’s brain is like a sponge. Children naturally absorb information by making observations at a young age. In a few years, children are able to speak a language naturally, without any kind of direct instruction. Likewise, children are able to captivate very easily the difference between right and wrong. I truly believe that a person’s moral ethics are defined early on in their childhood. Influences such as friends, family, and culture all reflect later on in their life. My childhood consisted of many things that have contributed to my current personal morals. I grew up in a rather small farming town in southern Connecticut. My father was in the United States Navy, and my mother stayed at home with my three brothers and myself. After high school I attended college, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. My entire life I have had to make ethical decisions, and after taking this course, I have finally realized why I make those choices.

It’s almost human nature to make ethical decisions. I personally believe that one’s culture, family, religion, and any other influences, determines how an individual will act. Before taking this course, I did not know the reasoning behind all of my actions. I did not understand the different theories such as utilitarianism and altruism. I now have a clear understanding of the individuals involved with creating such theories, and how they influenced the world. I will continue to take all of the concepts learned in this course, and not only help benefit myself, but also my daughter. I will try and instill all of the knowledge that I have absorbed in the past few weeks, and teach my daughter the difference between good intent and ill intent. I will take what I have learned about virtues, egoism, and the studies of John Stuart Mill, and try and teach my daughter so she can have a very ethical sound

While deliberating over what specific personal experience I should use for the purpose of this essay, I thought deeper about how ethical decision making plays a huge role in my life. It’s even bigger than I often realize. I do not picture myself as being one who has to go above and beyond in order to show integrity through my actions; it is simply just who I am, and how I believe all of the world should be. This viewpoint that I have on decision making in life can be shown through my actions during this previous high school rodeo state finals.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

Before learning about all of the different ethical theories we had a few different cases to think about and decide what we do in the situation. I believe that at the time I based my decisions solely on what I thought I should do, but had absoluetly no explaination as to why. Now, though some of my answers have changed and some have not, I have a new found knowledge and understanding of ethics that has better shaped my decisions and understanding of the world in general. My initial response to the Shallow Pond case was to miss the exam and save the child 's life. In the Coffee vs Letter case I chose to donate.…

One topic that truly captivates me is ethics. To start, an understanding of ethics is crucial to the study of my three favorite subjects: history, religion and philosophy. But more significantly, I discovered the importance of personal ethics in my daily life through close analysis of the writings of Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill and Peter Singer. My personal approach to behavioral decision-making aligns closely with utilitarianism. Rather than focusing purely on my individual happiness, I strive to maximize the amount of happiness for the greatest number of people possible.…
