My personal literacy development has been influenced by many factors, however the most prominent factors are My parents, my seventh grade teacher Mrs. Jones, and finally my academics. My parents have been very influential throughout my literacy journey. My very first memories of reading came before I had the ability to read at all. During preschool and my early years of kindergarten, I used to bring home small books no more than ten pages from my school and have my parents read them to me. Many parents read to their children, however not all children get the enjoyment from reading as I did, and continue reading on their own for pleasure. Each night reading with my parents was similar to the beginning of a new adventure. I got somewhat addicted to books and the more my parents read to me the more addicted I became. Learning to read on my own came with ease because I wanted to have the ability to read without the aid of my parents. In addition to my development of a reader at an early age, my parents also introduced me to sports at a young age, …show more content…
This passion for reading was transformed into a love. This is because my grade seven teacher Mrs Jones was admired for her teaching of the Harry Potter books. I had heard many great things about the Harry Potter series written by J.K Rowling but never got around to reading them myself. I also was also fortunate enough to have an english background and learned a lot from my father and my grandparents who are very knowledgeable about literature. Before we began reading the text I was already excited to discover what new adventure I was going to partake in, this time. The novel we read in class was Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. With each turn of the pages, the story only got more intriguing, which compelled me to read more even outside of class. From my wonderful grade seven experience, I read every single Harry Potter novel after that. It was probably one of the best if not the best series I have ever read. Mrs. Jones along with my parents emphasised that the key to becoming a successful writer is to read. As I read more Harry Potter books through the rest of grade seven and grade eight, the quality of my writing became much better and I received very high marks. With such a wide range of vocabulary and knowledge from reading so much, I was able to improve my analytical thinking and develop creative ideas to write about. I was able to write without becoming frustrated or without being able to convey
