Assignment 2 – Personal Leadership Challenge

Context For my personal leadership challenge, I have chosen to examine the area of family in my life. While growing up, I have always been the type to rebel against authority. Specifically, the authoritarian approach that my parents used when asking me to do things. I understood that I had to obey and do what my parents asked or told me to do, or else I would get in trouble. However, I thought this would change when I became an adult either at the age of 18 or 21. This was not the case as I was still told to do things when and how they wanted and expected to obey with no questions asked. Due to this, I found myself rebelling more and more; developing a bad attitude towards my parents, more specifically my mother as she always expected me to work and function on her time schedule. As an adult this drove me to develop a bad attitude when interacting with her in certain situations. For example, if she asked me to complete a simple task that would take maybe a few minutes, I would respond with “I will do it later” as I was currently busy at that …show more content…
I feel that by focusing on how I act towards certain people and holding a certain standard of behavioural traits, I can create better attitudes towards people I interact with. Abraham (1963) outlines human conditions for being a good leader, one of which being “the necessity of establishing a firm sense of identity” (p. 21). This will help with my challenge as I strive to understand myself and behaviours in relation to people such as my parents. To approach my challenge, I will use a trait based perspective to approach and analyze it as outlined by Stephen (2007) where he outlines ways to research leaders based on their traits and how different people act in certain
