“Some people dream of success, while other people get up every morning and make it happen,” Wrote, Wayne Huizenga. That was me, I’ve been dreaming about success every day for eight years until I decided to make it a reality. Before I joined Thomas Nelson Community College, I was a wife, a mother, and a dreamer; but once my youngest daughter started her learning journey, I started my journey of success too. My goal is to learn principles, strategies, and skills to be a successful teacher. Confidence and excitement were my feelings to walk in my path, accompanied with fear and anxiety from failure. As I consider my current academic journey through the semester in ENF 2, I realize I have accomplished a great deal and learned many strategies to help me in subsequent courses.
During my studies in the class of ENF 2, I developed a strong vocabulary, because I’ve learned about different strategies which tied my background knowledge and enhanced my comprehension. First, the denotation and connotation

Dr. Seuss said: “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Learning about new strategies in reading, such as the context clues, stated main idea and the implied main idea, and looking for the topic of the paragraph helped me to understand the comprehension lessons I’ve read in the class. First, I knew how Malcolm X challenged himself. For instance, he wrote the dictionary to improve his vocabulary and his penmanship. Second, I discovered how the blue whale survives, for example, he holds its breath for 30 minutes only twice per hour before it glides into the water. My key life lessons are that nothing beats hard work and if you treat others with respect, they will generally treat you with respect. Hard work and effort are the main aspects that lead to “lucky” things happening. Good things don’t just fall into people’s laps, the ones that have the most “luck” generally are those that put in the most effort and work. Also, I have learned that when you truly respect those around, they will respect you back and life is much easier when you aren’t doing things behind each other’s backs.…

“Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” from Haas & Flowers wants us to understand the true meaning of reading and writing, how we need to see reading as a “constructive rather than a receptive process” (Haas & Flower 167). Targeting students and teachers as well, Haas and Flower managed to develop an article that explains and shows us some misconception of our daily writing life that should be known by everybody. They make questions towards students asking if they really gather all the information that is available in the articles, and if they are available to print them on their writings. Some of the students use a strategy called “rhetorical reading” to get the most out of the texts but only experienced readers managed to use this skill as supposed to. Freshman readers and experienced readers are mentioned and evaluated with the same article, comparing their results, Haas & Flower observed that experienced readers could get more juice out of the readings due to the experience and the previous knowledge in the area.…

Overall, the course content of M464 was all designed to aid prospective educators in learning about how, when, and why specific methods word the way they do. Students enrolled in M464 were urged to look for specific strategies within their field placements. If these strategies were not observed or new strategies were not discovered, candidates were suggested to critically think about what other strategies could be put in place to access higher-level reading comprehension of whatever activities were going on in the classroom. Furthermore, teacher candidates were urged throughout the semester to connect these different strategies to the various levels of questioning and student needs involved in Bloom’s Taxonomy (Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating), the “Five Pillars” of reading instruction (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension), as well as the course text: Content Area Reading: Teaching and Learning for College and Career Readiness by Maureen McLaughlin through weekly strategy write-ups in order to garner a better understanding of these strategies.…

This building never contained one life changing event for me, but it has been a pivotal place in my life. A place I’ve referred to as home many times, the YMCA has shaped who I am as a man. This pivotal spot is where I suffered my first traumatic injury, changing how I do things for the rest of my life; but also was the place I went to when coping with family incidents. This institution, in particular the basketball gym, helped me find myself, changing my life forever.…
