Personal Narrative: My Journey To Social Work

Improved Essays
When I first decided to go back to college after being out for a number of years, I was not sure what I wanted to do. My husband and I discussed what field I should pursue and I decided to go into Social Work. Our lives are forever changed because of the decision. I started at the University of Mississippi in Tupelo in August, 2014.
I felt that all the classes I took were very helpful in my pursuit of my education. SW 450 Fields of Social Work was the only class that I felt did not help me in any way. It seems that this class just discussed things that we had gone over time and time again and did not offer any new information. I may be the only student that feels that way, but it was my experience. At the beginning of my time at Ole Miss, I

I have loved everything about it, even the stressful times that members of my group did not do their work for a senior project. I have always felt encouraged by my professors and always felt that they wanted me to succeed. If I ever had any questions or concerns, I knew that they were available and would help in any way they could.
There are a few goals that I have for my future. I plan on getting a job when I finish my internship. I hope to accept one at Alcorn County Department of Child Protection Services where I have been doing my internship, but if not; I will look for a job at another agency. I hope to get my Social Work License as soon as possible. After working for about a year, I plan on going back to school to get my Master’s Degree. Once I complete that degree, I am not sure what I will do. If I enjoy the job I have, I will remain there, if not, I will search for something new.
I hope that throughout my social work career, I keep learning and growing as a social worker and as a person. I always want to further my education and hope to I can use it to teach others. Who knows, one day I may even become a social work professor

In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

In this paper, I will be summarizing the information from this week’s reading. Additionally, from this week’s reading I will provide examples of how the content applies to my personal spiritual journey. Lastly, I will provide my ideas of how this week’s reading will apply to my future human services career. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” said Nelson Mandela. When President Obama launched the Young African Leaders Initiative in 2010 to support the emerging generation of African leaders, this was to educate us to change Africa. I believe this Professional Development Experience is intended to give Fellows practical training and the opportunity to learn transferable skills, and apply theories learned in civic leadership classes in the real-world setting. As a leader, I seek to participate actively and productively in the field of global health leadership and health policy and to fill a strategic position in a multinational institution working on promoting health, particularly in Africa.…

My values, attitudes, and assumptions have changed slightly over the course of the MSW program. I think that is partly due to my field placement and the coursework of the MSW program. I am currently placed at a home-based counseling agency called Quality Care in Augusta, GA. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a therapist. I think I seen movies where a client would come into a psychologist’s office and lay down on a red, comfy couch and tell stories from their childhood, which developed them into the person they are today.…
