Probation Officer Career Path

I also need to make sure that I can keep my feelings and emotions out of my work. This is good and bad, I will always have passion and empathy for the youth, however you cannot get caught up in their lives and feel bad for the actions they have done. I believe in tough love, but it is much harder when placed in that situation. Professionally we learn tasks overtime while we have hands on experience. The internship prepared me for this career path in so many ways. I learned about all the duties that the probation officers do on a daily basis. I learned how the different services intertwine with one another. This including surveillance, and court school. It has really taught me a lot about the system as a whole and what it takes day to day …show more content…
I would say that over all the biggest lesson I have learned is that every case is different. You cannot treat each child the same or each case the same. Backgrounds, environment and families really have an influence on the child. There are some children that would rather be on probation because they feel that it actually protects them from things in their life. Some of the girls are involved in trafficking and being a ward of the court actually keeps them safe from the streets and who owns them. These stories are so sad and until you can connect with the child it is hard to judge and put a label on the child. Learning how to relate to them so they feel comfortable talking to you is probably the hardest yet most rewarding part of the job. These kids do not trust anyone, so for them to open up is a great stride in the right direction. Learning the children will always be a task that can only get better each day with …show more content…
I couldn’t have asked for a better internship and staff to work with. I met goals that I set at the beginning of the summer. I made a positive impact on children, learned how to probation officers do hearing reports, worked on my communication skills, as well as computer data entry. Working with families is so important and I learned so many skills to relate to them. There are a few courses that really helped me such as juvenile correctional counseling and communications. Some courses that would be beneficial for my future in this career would be a computer class that focused on law enforcement programs and a foreign language, specifically Spanish. Personally I grew as in individual, learning how to be in the professional world and interact in that setting. I grew so much confidence and oral skills. I still need to work on how to learn from others than do things that seem backwards to me. I do not think my way is the best way, but some of the people do things that I haven’t quite understood yet. I learned so many duties that it takes to make the court system run smoothly, and what the probation officers do on a daily basis. Learning how to relate and talk to the kids to make them feel comfortable is so important. I will always give it my best to rehabilitate a child and help them see the successful path in life. This is harder with youth from a difficult background and environment, they

As a Society, we emphasize that children are our future and how they have the potential to keep changing the world, which is why we must invest in their future. However, it seems that those children that are classified or seen as deviant are not a part of that vision of having the potential to make a positive impact. Therefore, their life does not matter, which is why they get lost in a system and carry a mentality that they do not matter. A major purpose of prison is to cause rehabilitation, being able to allow these individuals incarnated to become enable them to be a law abiding citizen. Even though, that is the purpose of prison if it is not working for adults then we must have a better solution for our youth because once they age out of…

The principles of trauma-informed care (TIC) can be universally applied to other practice models, such as the family preservation model. Using a strengths-based perspective is a valuable TIC principle that would be very effective in family preservation. By highlighting a family’s strengths you can use these attributes to address challenges. Noticing strengths can also help build engagement and rapport with clients to help aid in the intervention process. Being person-centered is another TIC principle that could guide family preservation practice (D. Strohm, PowerPoint, September 10th, 2015).…

“Fear, the Best Influential Motivation” In my opinion, the use of fear is a very influential motivation to use. Nothing more than something that scares me will make me do whatever I need to get done, or in this case change me for the better. In the story, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, the preacher preaches in the sermon basically if you don’t convert to being a godly man/woman you will be sentenced to eternal dam nation which includes burning in a bottomless pit forever.…

I’ve seen too many friends fall into the wrong path and make some awful life changing decisions. Before the end of my high school career I had witnessed individuals from groups around me participate in gang shoot outs, fights, distribution and usage of drugs. As I’ve seen my peers commit crimes and were introduced into the criminal system, I thought to myself that the negative effects brought by my peers has taken a substantial impact on our community. I questioned, if their own teachers and friends won't bother to help then who will? Troubled youth need a role model who can be strong willed to help them make a better future for themselves, search for a purpose in life, and won't give up on them like everybody else did.…

It is essential to use the proper skills to build a working relationship by building rapport; gaining trust and caring for your clients. I thankfully have never had to go through seeing someone in my family, or a friend who has had to go through the probation process. In addition, from your story it sounds lie your family members probation officer did everything she could to help him. Finally I could imaging, especially in cases of working with teenagers, that the job as a probation officer would become extremely emotionally tiring. Thank you for sharing your story.…

Even though he didn’t know he was in a stolen car and didn’t take any part in a schoolyard fight which had occurred earlier, he was charged with two felonies. Overall, I was thoroughly surprised to learn how the juvenile justice system handled the juveniles under its care. I was surprised to see what little involvement the juveniles had in the court room and how they sometimes didn’t even talk, they just sat there listening to what was going on. Another thing I was surprised about was that there were so little options to send the juveniles who had problems and that some of the options didn’t work which resulted in the kid continuing to commit…

In the beginning of the semester, I would admit I was nervous to start my internship with the Divisional Clerks office. Growing up I enjoyed watching the television show; Law and Order Special Victims Unit, with my grandfather every day after school. When we would sit and watch the show together, my grandfather would tell me all the time “You would make a great lawyer Joe.”…
