A philosophy is our underlying beliefs, which guide everything that we do. There are five philosophies that when put together will create a strong framework for someone to perfect their own educational philosophies. They are essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstructionism, and existentialism. These five philosophies are especially important for teachers in being more self-aware and to make the right choices in classroom. My personal education philosophy falls under the category of Essentialism. What does Essentialism mean? Essentialism is the view that all children should be taught on traditional lines, with the accumulation of knowledge of civilization through courses in the traditional academic disciplines. Its is supporter of a conservative philosophic perspective. Its emphasis is on academic and moral standards, that should be passed on through the entire school system. It is a traditional ‘back-to-basics’ movement that is meant to train the mind, think logically, and to guarantee a common culture in the classroom. An Essentialist main goal would be to provide their students with the “essentials” of knowledge and skills needed in that class. Also, to teach discipline, hard work, and respect for officials. An Essentialist’s classroom would be a collection of math, science, history, foreign language, and literature. These are core curriculum disciplines that are the main foundation of education.
