Rhetorical Analysis Of Becoming A Professional Athlete

Growing up, I was told my dreams are unrealistic. I would tell my parents that I want to be a Major League Baseball player when I grow up, but they merely laugh and tell me, “good luck with that”. I was told I have to be a good catholic. I would sit through hours upon hours of religious education to officially become a “member” of church that is built upon the values of accepting everyone and anyone into one of it’s masses. I was pressured to get good grades, so I could get into a good college, and get a “real” job. But what if a high school student isn’t interested in going to college to become a businessman, lawyer or engineer? Maybe he would rather get his hand dirty, fixing the car that the man who spent $200,000 on a college education …show more content…
Whether it is going to the cape for a long summer weekend, grabbing a donut at Dunks before going to class, catching a Sox game under the lights at Fenway, or cheering for the Pats on a brisk autumn evening, these are the days I live for. Like many Bostonians, I am an obsessive Boston sports fan, so when I got the option to write a rhetorical analysis about any article I wanted, I had to write about Deflategate. Deflategate is the cheating scandal surrounding the New England Patriots and their Quarterback, Tom Brady. The article I chose to review was one that provided a very intriguing opinion on the whole Deflategate situation, one contrary to the popular belief that Deflategate has been a failure for the league. Being the avid Patriots fan I am, it was very difficult to eradicate my emotions and biases from this article. However, in doing so, I learned how to write an effective rhetorical analysis. One of the most important parts about writing a rhetorical analysis was to make sure that you do not merely review the article, rather you had to dig deep and find out how the article was intended to sound towards the reader. In doing this, I was able to back my findings with evidence from the article itself, and external sources. Most importantly, I enjoyed writing this piece as it allowed me to do an in-depth analysis on an article about the …show more content…
However, there is a difference between being smart and being educated that sometimes gets neglected. To me, being smart is to have a large amount a knowledge in a variety of different subjects, and to be educated is to know the basics of each discipline: mathematics, English, sciences, and history. This allows one to be able to function as a member of society. Because of my value for education, I take pride in the work that I do to further my general education. With this comes the process of learning from my mistakes in order to perfect my writing skills. In first year writing, in order to learn from our mistakes, we conducted revision exercises throughout the year that would help us perfect our essays. This included writing peer reviews for others, receiving peer review, and work shopping essays during class. Through these strategies, I was able to learn more about writing, whether it is the structure of rhetorical analysis paper, or how to craft topic sentences that better fit thesis. These are the small writing skills that I think are important for everyone have in order to be a functioning member of the society we live in today, and it is because of my passion for learning these skills that I choose to use the pieces to better myself as a writer.

From the beginning of civilization, humanity has pondered the purpose of acquiring knowledge, the purpose of education. In the article, Bishop describes how the scandal has led to be, but continues towards the end defending on how well Tom Brady can play during a game. “They won with footballs properly inflated, as we were reminded again and again by TV cameras displaying the well-protected game balls” (Bishop). He turns from defending both sides of the scandal to praise the work of Tom Brady, going against all of what critics said during the scandal. This fallacy goes against how the article was conveyed, as an article pertaining to the situation of Deflategate and not what the author’s opinion is about the situation. The sides have been argued about, but Bishop changes the view of the topic to an opinion he has, viewing Tom Brady as an exceptional player instead of a cheater.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Donald Williams Mrs. Blamey English 10 July 17, 2016 The Patriots The Patriots’ punishment for allegedly deflating the footballs during the Super Bowl is wrong because the balls were only deflated in the first half of the game, all professional sports teams cheat, and because the Patriots were the overall better team. In the 2014 Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts, the New England Patriots were accused of fixing the game to their advantage. There was evidence that the Patriots did indeed cheat, but there is also evidence defending them. This article’s purpose is not to say the New England Patriots did not cheat.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

In my college career which has been around 4 years now, these first two weeks are the first of any trimester or semester that instead of being enrolled in classes, I’m enrolled in an internship. This is definitely a change from the norm but at the same time it is exciting as well. It gives me the opportunity to use or observe some of the material that I have learned so far in my classes at Johnson & Wales in a real scenario. This internship allows me as well to gain much needed additional experience in the sports and athletics industry and will give me a more holistic view of the athletic program. It will allow me to see many different roles and see from various projects what parts of athletics I like or dislike since I am overall still open for the future to a variety of roles in the sports industry…
