My Personal Code Of Ethics

An individual’s ethics or morals serve as the foundation for how they go about decision making in their day-to-day life. Personally I strive to live an ethical life and make ethical decisions. I believe that how you are raised by your parents has a great deal to do with shaping one’s personal ethics. For example, my parents always stressed to me that lying was wrong and whenever I got caught lying (more times than once, unfortunately), I would be punished. My dad would always tell me that trust is something that is built up over time but one lie can break all of that trust instantly. I learned numerous times growing up that in the long run telling the truth and being honest was the right thing to do. A person’s ethical view is also greatly influenced by how people around them act. Growing up as a child if you see your parents do something or even say something you pick up on that and more likely than not, will one day act in a similar way. My personal code of ethics revolves around maintaining a high level of integrity and treating people the way that I would want to be treated. My hope is that whenever I face tough decisions, whether it is in my personal life or my professional life, I come back to these two key principles and am able to recognize right from wrong. I realize that I will be faced with difficult situations that don’t have a clear right or wrong answer, but as long as I thoroughly think through the situation and weigh out the different outcomes, I feel confident that I have all the tools I need to make the best decision. When the day comes that I am no longer on this earth I want to be remembered as a person who was honest, trustworthy, driven, and compassionate. If those are the words used to describe me, that is a life I can hang my hat
