Why I Believe In God?

Improved Essays
Each weekend, millions and even billions of people go to a church, synagogue, or mosque to worship a single deity. People of other religions worship one deity, multiple deities, or even no deities. There are even people who believe in a deity or deities, but are not religious; people who think that it is not possible to know which deity or deities are true and are therefore not religious (these people are often called agnostics); and even people who outright reject the existence of deities (these people are often called atheists). I am one who believes that there could be a deity, but is just not completely sure. I have no issue with any of these religions existing; it is their choice to believe in their religions and deities. Even though it is rational to not believe in God, it is likewise rational to believe in God. …show more content…
I was raised in a Catholic household, like many people who were born in the United States. My parents are not the most religious people in the world; my grandmother, who is an extremely religious person, always urged my parents to go to church. I grew up in the Catholic Church and even took the rite of Confirmation, but I lost interest. After some thought, I came to the conclusion that I don’t need to believe in the Christian God to have a happy life. I do believe, however, there is a possibility that there is a god. Despite my beliefs, I am perfectly fine with people believing in a religion.
Now, why is it rational to believe in God? It is quite simple, actually; it has much to do with happiness. In Elliott Sober’s chapter on the French philosopher Blaise Pascal and irrationality in his book Core Questions in Philosophy¸ Sober discusses Sigmund Freud’s thoughts on religion. Sober

I am a proud Christian. I go to Crossway Baptist Church in Springfield and have been for basically my entire life. I believe that because my parents took me to church pretty much ever since I was born, that it’s the reason I have very straight forward morals and beliefs. I also believe it has had a major impact on who I have become as a person. I’m caring and loyal, the person my friends come to, to get things off their chest that they don’t feel like they can share with others.…

Revisions to the Pledge of Allegiance The Pledge of Allegiance was written by a socialist minister named Francis Bellamy in August of 1892. The concept of God or belief in some type of higher being can be traced back centuries upon centuries, and this very faith has played an integral part in shaping countless different societies and cultures throughout time. When put into perspective, there are an infinite amount of variations about what people mean by God, whether it is atheism, monotheism, polytheism, or even deism, the possibilities are potentially endless. In addition, many cultures can also be connected by their different theisms such as the polytheistic Hindus and Greeks. One such parallel that can be drawn between the Hindu and Greek religious pantheons is that they were created through the story telling of their myths and have a large family tree of gods and goddesses.…

In this essay I first outline Pascal’s wager to the existence of God and then evaluate his argument. Pascal argues that one ought to wager “that God is” because “[i]f you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing,” and that given this, one can bring oneself to believe in God. I argue that one cannot truly bring themselves to believe in God. Pascal’s argument is set up in three parts. The first part accepts that God is infinitely incomprehensible.…

    I. Introduction Over the last few thousand years or so, the question of whether God exists or not has been under serious examination. There are only two answers to this question: either you do believe in God’s existence or you don’t. Even if all the evidence in the entire universe leans towards the latter, some people still assume that a supernatural being exists. Blaise Pascal was one of these individuals, and he also believes that regardless of whether it’s probable or not, it’s in your best interest to believe in the existence of God. This idea is called Pascal’s Wager, and it states that although the odds may be against it, the payoff for believing in God is much more fulfilling than not believing.…

Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

People believe in god for many different reasons. Some believe that there is a greater power, some need an explanation to what life holds after death, and some just need answers for the things we cannot explain. "Pascal assumes that there are just two options for wagering: either believe in the God of Christianity, or don't. But those aren't the only options. There are lots of religions with rival accounts of who God is, how to serve him, and what happens in the afterlife.”…

Many people believe in God because they believe they have seen a vision of him, or of an angel or a virgin in blue with their own eyes, or he speaks to them inside their heads. This may appear a convincing argument from personal experience but is least convincing to anyone knowledgeable about psychology. Peter Sutcliff, the Yorkshire Ripper, distinctly heard the voice of Jesus, telling him to kill women. Many mass murderers have heard orders from God to commit murder.…

If it is believed that God does exist but God does not, then though we will have missed out on other pleasures, like getting to sleep in, for example, instead of going to church Sunday mornings, we will have had comfort from the faith, regardless of its falseness. According to the wager, you will have less than infinite happiness, but only marginally. However, believing that God does not exist, when God does indeed exist results in negatively infinite happiness, and believing that God does not exist and he legitimately does not exist, then you only gain a fraction of happiness, not infinite. Therefore, it is in one’s favor to believe in God whether or not Pascal is correct, considering that the expected payoff of happiness that comes with believing trumps the payoff of disbelieving.…

On the topic of my educational career, I am a high school junior and I have been enrolled in a private, Christian preparatory school nearly my entire life; my mother enrolled me when I was five years old and my first memory of the school is when I was holding my mother’s hand, thinking about how my kindergarten teacher would be like. My teachers have all been great, because I was able to receive a great education and they were able to do their job by keeping the order in their room. Being a high school student, I made the decision to enroll in honors classes; they would give me more of a challenge and the extra work would help me with time management. I can gladly say that I have received skills and advice that will continue to help me in my future endeavors.…

There are many types of religions in the world, all in which different cultures believe in. It is one thing to be raised and taught to believe in a “God” but it is an other thing when that “God” is proven real. Many people believe in a “higher power” but do not want to classify that “higher power” so that it does not change their lifestyle or their behaviour. Humans like to be comfortable in their own skin, with their own beliefs, therefore, they will try and convince themselves in what they believe is real for their own comfort. In that case, couldn 't that be very scary if they are wrong?…
