My Personal Aspects Of Complex Experiences In Civil Engineering

5. For this career, the skills and abilities listed as needed on O*NET are to have critical thinking skills, comprehension skills, the ability to solve complex problems that involve math, the ability to use inductive and deductive reasoning and to visualize how designs can be implemented in real life. All of these make sense due to the fact that Civil Engineers need to be able to think on the spot for solutions and be able to evaluate their decisions to come up with simple solutions to complex problems. From Mr. Ayers I learned that people in this field also need to have great communication skills especially for someone in his position. He has to describe these complex ideas to people who are not familiar with the context and terms used in …show more content…
My strengths are in my consistency, relatability, analytical skills, positive attitude and ability to find common ground. I am consistent in my work, and the way that I treat others by giving everyone an equal share or opportunity. I try to make sure I understand all the facts and data, as well as personal opinions before I make a decision. No matter how busy I may be, I try to keep a healthy relationship with the people I know by listening and encouraging. I like to dissect information and patterns to see which parts remain true and which parts wither away. I prefer to think before I speak, so that I have some kind of reasoning or data to back up what I say, and to avoid any potential conflicts. I think that these skills listed above would fit this career nicely. Civil Engineers have a lot of team work to do, and in order to be successful in that work, I will need to have a positive attitude to keep the team together. I will also need to use my skill of considering all options and opinions before making a decision because there could be a better or cheaper solution as Mr. Ayers suggested in the interview. Furthermore, I will need to use my analytical skills to look at previous examples of designs to find patterns in designs to see which parts could be applied to a current situation. I will also have to be consistent in order to meet project deadlines and demands which is something highly stressed in the Civil Engineering meetings. Some barriers I might face with this …show more content…
The quote I chose to summarize this semester was “We don 't receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a journey that no one can take for us or spare us.” I selected this quote because no one can make us go through college. No one can make sure we get god grades like our parents used to in High School. It is up to us now to make our own decisions. Also, I learned that a lot of the material covered in lecture does not show up on the exams, instead it is other information not covered in lecture. This relates to the quote by it detailing that wisdom is not given, but it is earned. Now we know that we won’t be told everything and we need to be able to learn on our own. My goals for this semester were to CODO into FYE and to have a 3.5 GPA. These goals changed throughout the semester because I changed my idea for a major to actuary and statistics a few times, but now it is back to Civil Engineering. Also, I will most likely be able to get a 3.5 GPA with the grades in my current classes which means that I set a reachable goal. If I am able to CODO, then my goals will more focused on things other than GPA such as joining a few clubs by the end of the year but still have a goal for attaining a high

Rough Draft In “Brainology”, Carol Dweck talks about how the many different types of students work for their educational goals. Also how many of them go through workshops to experiment in the project Dweck is trying to make everyone realize. As for me, I am slightly different from the students Dweck talks about, I only have one other sibling going to school that knows what I have to go through. Throughout my life I’ve experienced many lectures by the people I love and by strangers, but little did I know that their advice was going to help me in the near future…

Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

After determining career goals, the next step is determining present skills and competencies which are particularly valuable. Individuals must take a deliberate catalogue of their education, experiences, and training in order to ensure a career plan is realistic (Burack & Mathys, p.7, 1979). I have developed a number of skills both academically and through work experience which can be leveraged in my career. My hard skills include engineering, coding, operating air defense systems, planning defense designs, military operational understanding, and conducting procedural management of airspace. My soft skills include public speaking, coaching, critical thinking, group facilitation, and mentorship.…
