I aim to incorporate all the learnt skills in my work and make these facilities available to the low-income groups. I always wanted people to be aware of oral hygiene and its consequences. Dentistry struck me as a potential career at a young age. When one of my mother’s friends was diagnosed with oral cancer from tobacco use, she felt tremendous pain every time I saw her even while doing typical events like eating and talking. Thus, I have always been active to limit tobacco usage as my personal experience greatly shows the negative consequences. This event has made me want to help people suffering from dental problems due to carelessness. Many dental problems can be prevented in their initial stages with a simple trip to the dentist. I have encountered a patient who was very superstitious. She asked me to extract all her teeth. When I started my examination, I could not find any problem in oral cavity and in a radiograph. I refused to extract her teeth. The poor lady was in tears and said her son’s life would be in danger if her teeth are not extracted immediately. She visited a monk and he insisted her to do so. She also told that many people visited him and he will be giving the solution for their problem. I thought to solve this problem rather than just convincing the woman. I along with my colleague visited the monk’s place, filed a complaint against him and put him behind the bars. This was published in the local newspaper of Hyderabad, India in Feb 2013.
