Both patient and husband said “Yes, if you can come back maybe in 30 min or so.” I thank both patient and the husband and that I will be back in 30 min or so with my professor. I knocked the door before entering patients room. My opening statement was I introduced myself, my professor, and why I was there, which was to teach patient cord care. I started with how the cord looks like when the baby is born. The cord looks yellow and moist, then the cord is cut and clamped. I mentioned to the patient that the cord will be removed before discharge. I described to the patient what the cord would look like when it starts to heal. The cord would start to dry up, look black and shriveled. I emphasize to patient that the cord will fall off on its own, which usually takes 10 to 14 days. Pulling, playing, picking, and cutting the cord even if it is hanging by the string, patient should not do anything and allow the cord to fall off. To complete the teaching experience, I mentioned to patient to fold the upper of the diaper just below the cord to allow faster drying and to prevent irritation. Also made suggestion, to not submerge the baby in water and sponge bath is recommended until the cord fall off.
