On June 23, 2000, my mother gave birth to a child and named her Sherry Ong. She is the second child and the last of the Ong family. At the age of five, my path of education began. I attended Homecrest School of Music for elementary school. As a child I wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment field. I devoted all my time on improving my clarinet and vocal abilities. I joined every talent show starting second grade and did whatever I could to get recognition from my teachers and family. However, my parents didn’t agree with my decisions.
My parents pushed me to attend prep places everyday and had a different path in mind for me. My parents are immigrants. My father emigrated from Vietnam during the war and my mother emigrated from Hong Kong. They both struggled to travel to America, but they did it for me and my sister’s future. They sacrificed their lives in their hometowns for us. They believed that America was a steady location for the start of a family. They may be strict, but they wanted my sister and I to have the future that they couldn’t obtain. They believed that in America, we could live freely and not suffer from persecution. Despite their strict personalities, they are caring and love my sister and I very much. Usually when we ask for something, we receive it if

I am currently in the Midwood band and play the flute. As of today, I still play the piano but unfortunately not the clarinet. I hope that I can continue to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Although attending John Dewey was a dark moment in my life, it can be used as a learning experience for me. I’ve experienced being with the outcome of students who have given up. This motivates me to strive for the best and to always try my

For years, I thought that earning a bachelors degree was my way to repay my parents for all they have done for me. However, this book made me realized, I had no idea what my parents really went through and all the sacrifices they made when they moved to the United States. Thus, in this paper I explore their experience and attempt to understand it using Louie’s book as a source of reference.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

At the end of sixth grade, the junior high band came to my elementary school and performed for us. I watched in awe as students, not that much older than me, played music with their instruments. The flute players in the front row especially caught my attention; they were right next to the band directors and held their instruments up to the side, rather than down in front of them like the others. The flute had a high pitched melody and a bright silver color that appealed to me. That day, I signed up for the beginner band on the Coppinville Junior High registration sheet.…
