I have always loved volunteering at schools in my hometown. However, I knew there were more ways I could reach out and impact a life. The Boys and Girls Club of America introduced me to the essentials of educating our youth. For the past 4 years, I have seen students grow socially and academically. A former member of the club with a consistent relatable spirit allowed students to open up and enjoy my presence. My volunteerism with this organization gave me a bigger opportunity to be a part of the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation. Being a Big Sister helped me remain humble as I continued to maintain a sustainable relationship. When I listen to myself and believed I could break barriers of stereotypes, everything was clearer. There was no label to explain the person I

As defined by Cummings and Worley (2009), coaching was a development process whereby an individual meets on a regular basis to clarify goals, deal with potential stumbling blocks and improve their performance. It is an intervention that is highly personal and generally involves a one-on-one relationship between coach and client. “Similar to coaching, mentoring involves establishing a relationship between a manager or someone more experienced and another organization member who is less experienced. Unlike coaching, mentoring is often more directive, with the mentoring intentionally transferring specific knowledge and skill and guiding the client’s activities, perhaps as part of a career development…

Assisting mentees with issues such as struggling in a class is a vital aspect of the duties of a Peer Mentor. In this scenario, I would consider several possible alternatives to aid my student in getting the help they need in order to succeed. First, I would determine if I could immediately assist the student with any specific material-related issues. While I may not be a TA or tutor for the class, I am an accounting major and could answer any quick or simple problems they may have with an assignment or upcoming exam. However, if they are perpetually struggling and need further assistance, I would utilize the resources at our disposal.…

These internships are not only important in that they can give me experience in a career path that I am considering, but will also create challenges in which I will need to push myself to overcome. Since I came from the same neighborhoods that I have selected most of my internships to be at – where there are many underprivileged kids who relied on free summer school programs to keep themselves occupied and retain material learned during the school year – doing these internships are my way of giving back, saying thanks to the community, and to keep these public school programs running.
