A mentor empowers a person to see a possible future, and believe it can be obtained. It is easy to give up on a goal that is challenging and uncommon. My past struggles with self-acceptance and depression is the driving force behind all of my goals. “Lead by Example: Mentoring is a Priority” serves to bring awareness to impact mentoring has on our youth in schools, communities, and households. It strives to give our youth the tools to success and confidence to break down all barriers of stereotypes. The goal is for everyone regardless of race, gender, or sexuality to take responsibility for being a role model and influence a child’s life. We cannot lose hope on the next generation. Negativity is becoming a norm. Our youth imitate what they …show more content…
I have always loved volunteering at schools in my hometown. However, I knew there were more ways I could reach out and impact a life. The Boys and Girls Club of America introduced me to the essentials of educating our youth. For the past 4 years, I have seen students grow socially and academically. A former member of the club with a consistent relatable spirit allowed students to open up and enjoy my presence. My volunteerism with this organization gave me a bigger opportunity to be a part of the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation. Being a Big Sister helped me remain humble as I continued to maintain a sustainable relationship. Jameeka’s positive attitude has influenced other young ladies in her school to be a part of the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation. I believe it takes a village to raise a child. This platform is not only about what I can do but what we can do collaboratively. The Miss Teen Promise Female Scholarship and Preparatory Program is an organization that gives back to communities in Arkansas through volunteerism, mentoring and education. Similar to Miss America Organization, it serves to empower young women to be successful by providing scholarship funds for higher education. Being one of the spokesperson for organization I am able to reach out into my community and impact women on all levels. Overall with my involvement, I do believe balance is an important part of success and growth. In order to mentor our youth, I had to discover what made me shine in the dark. Leading by Example is not about perfection but understanding your experiences and using them towards your success. Stereotypes have been placed on me because of my gender, sexuality and education.
