My passion for wanting to obtain my Master’s in social work comes from a multitude of things: my personal life story and being considered an “at-risk” youth; as well as, rearing two children who suffer from mental health disabilities and my 10+ years of experience in the social services field. Society places a negative stigma on mental illness; thus, making it hard for many to receive the assistance they need to be successful in their recovery. My passion lies in helping those who suffer from mental disorders realize their true and full potential to live healthy and happy lives.
Let’s briefly explore my journey. I am a Black American woman born and raised in a small town in Mississippi. I dropped out of school when I was 16 and in the same year gave birth to my first child. Due to my

It has been over 5 years since obtaining my last Master’s Degree and I do not have any academic professors who could support my desire and attest to my ability of being a great candidate, but I have included my current and former directors as recommenders who were ecstatic to hear that I had made the decision to follow through with what they know to be a passion of mine. Both of my directors are LPC’s and come with an abundance of experience in the social services and mental health field. Not only are they my directors, but are also two of my mentors who will also contribute to my success.
I will use a host of resources to support my success as a student. The organization in which I work for is a leading agency in Georgia for Trauma Informed Care. They are a leader in social justice when it comes to fighting for the rights and equality of individuals with mental health issues, promoting diversity and supporting the homeless and LGBTQ

After graduating with a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, I intend on attempting the National Counselor Exam to become a National Certified Counselor and become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. I was left pondering one day after a pastor concluded his sermon with “if you can help one person then your life isn’t in vain”. That remark hit me deeply as in my darkest days I have often questioned the purpose of life and it was in that moment that I received my answer, an answer revolving around altruism. Although we are often taught that in order to find happiness we must look within, the reality may be that to find true happiness we must look outside of ourselves to the next person whose situation is similar, or more dire than our own that we can help. Therefore, I now believe that the path to self-actualization is simply transcending into a form of support for others so that they can better support themselves. Studying racial and social…
