I traveled to Maryland, Washington DC, and Indianapolis. I also visited New York, New Jersey and Miami. As I toured this wonderful country, I felt a strong connection with the American people and places. Since I had the incredible opportunity of comparing Cuba to the United States, I understood that America was the country in which I wished to live. Although both countries have good and bad characteristics, I prefer, for sure, to live in America for the rest of my life. Everything was arranged, apparently an easy decision, right? But people’s questions still remained. “What about dental school? You are going to start 4th year! Going to the USA without your degree? Are you crazy Glenda?” So, many questions just for me; a Cuban girl who wanted to become a dentist in the United States. “That is impossible,” they said. “You won’t be able to, it is in English and extremely expensive. At most, you will turn into a hygienist and that is it,” they stated. However, I did not hear them. I would not let them jeopardize my decision. This is my life, not open to discussion. Nevertheless, I confess, it was not stress-free to confront relatives’ opinions. On the other hand, I felt sad about leaving my school, so full of remarkable experiences and expectations. Life in the U.S.A has not been easy. Actually, it has been very challenging. However, God has always remained with me and my family and so I feel blessed. I believe that only we are responsible for making our dreams come true. It will take me seven years to become a dentist, but I do not mind, for I will do it. I am on the right track and I will fight and defend my dream. I feel like a winner all the time (of course with humility), and I believe that I am the one who designs and is responsible for the parameters of my life’s dreams. The confidence in myself has shown me that I am able to do whatever I propose, even if this means to start all over again in a foreign country, with a different language and a big debt. Therefore, when my graduation day arrives, I will be so proud of that 21 years old girl who decided to leave dental school in Cuba and undertake a successful journey towards realizing her dreams in
