My Passion In Hockey

Since the age of 7 years old I have pursued my passion of playing hockey. It has been one of the greatest influences in my life and has brought me to lot’s different places as well as taught me many lessons. The influence that hockey has had on me cannot be described simply as activity on a college application nor in the statement that I am only a hockey player. Hockey has sculpted me into the developing human being I am today. Throughout the 13 years I have played this game it has been full of highs and lows. The highs being when things are going your way but what truly defines you is the ability rebound when you are at your lowest point.
My lowest point of my hockey career happened during minor hockey while trying out for my local AA hockey team. It was my first AA tryout and I

I had a lot to prove, to show that I was good enough to make the team that had been the nearly the same for the last 2 years. I poured my soul on to the ice that week in an all out effort to earn a roster spot on the Milton WinterHawks peewee AA team. I skated with efficiency, and purpose, with every stride I felt closer to my goal. As the first couple of rounds of cuts happened it seemed that I was getting closer and closer to achieving my goal. They were now 20 skaters but only 18 spots which meant we would have to play an exhibition game. I have never been so nervous for a game before, the thrill to put on that jersey and play as a part of that team was like nothing I have ever felt before. As the game went on it was a different the level for me, the speed, the passing, and the intelligence of each player

Sometimes, in sports or in life in general, there are favorites and underdogs. There is a general consensus that the favorite team or player will win but sometimes it`s the underdog that wins and receives all the honor related with that win. This is very similar to what I read about Seabiscuit and what I watched in the video of Jason McElwain. Some people have the ability to transcend their underdog status (ie. Red from Seabiscuit and Jason) and create something very special.…

It was a game where little mistakes could be made and a loss could send us home for good. I was slightly nervous, but I enjoy the spotlight, especially as an underdog. The game went back and forth and was tight going into the final few minutes. We were known as a team that fights and never gives up.…

As an athlete, I began my journey in sports full of dedication, fire, and hopeful anticipation of what I could do on the football field and on the basketball court. Much of my life has been devoted to extracurricular activities such as sports and the comelec, which taught me hard lessons in ethics and values that have made me who I am today. I not only represented my school varsity, but also sports clubs outside of school, which led me to compete in several local and international tournaments. As well as my passion for sports, I grew into my passion for service; service for others and for my school, partaking in clubs and community service activities, each endeavor playing a role in the development of my abilities and expansion of my potential…

When I was 15, I was cut first round at High Performance Minnesota tryouts. High Performance is the tryout program that eventually selects the best players in the country to play on the USA U18 National Team. When there is no NHL to look forward too as a woman, I strived to play college hockey and represent the United States of America at the national level. This cut was devastating, it ended many of my friends’ hockey careers, but it only pushed me to improve. Every practice and every game I played was my fullest effort to out work every player in Minnesota.…

Fear not your best friend fear Eagerly waiting for the sound of the final bell ending the game, I limped back to the locker room ashamed of failing my teammates once again. With my jersey drooping below my knees, I dreaded every second of ice time starring at a swarming pool of merciless giants. Receiving the puck gave you the opportunity to score, but for me it meant running into a wall. Running into other players sent me flying through the air before gasping for air and landing dazed on the verge of unconsciousness. The condemnation of failing to contribute to my team or participating in the physical aspect of hockey reminded me I was in a dark world of self-loathing because I couldn't accept this fact.…

Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

I felt that all my hoped and dreams in this world had been crushed by one decision. Soon after the first Junior Varsity practice I was no longer upset but motivated. I thought how lucky I was to be given an opportunity to play a game at any level and that I have a chance to help redeem the team from last year. This year I changed my mindset from losing to be improving each day. I put so much time and effort into a sport that I love and was going to play with as much heart as possible.…

The season was off to a rough start before it even started; our team was very inexperienced because we graduated thirteen seniors and five other players quit. A majority of the players were two so we were starting from square one. Nonetheless, I was optimistic and determined. As the only senior, and one of three upperclassman, I had been playing the longest and was determined that I would be able to lead the team to greatness. I was disappointed when we did not, but I did not let it stop me from trying.…

I had prepared all summer and in the preseason, nothing was going to get in my way. Our team was smaller this year and lacked the skill we had in the previous years, but that just meant I was going to have to step up even more. Before I was even born it seemed it was in my destiny to be a basketball player. My mom won a high school state championship and was some kind of legend in town. When she first signed me up to play in our town rec league, all of the men who ran the league couldn’t believe she didn’t sign up to coach. One of the guys at the table then turned to me and told me he was there when my mom scored the winning basket at the Boston Garden to take the team to the state championship game.…
