I took alternative science and general education classes instead of being guided through a stricter B.S. program and was able to broaden my horizons. I was introduced to the beautiful and strange world of parasites and neurobiology and immunology, as well as, the artistic world of theater and historical literature. My choice to venture off the typical path of a biology degree allowed me freedom to explore many courses I would have otherwise overlooked. I faced a new set of challenges in a new laboratory that was heavily dependent on biological hazards. I transferred my skills and learned new ones while learning to work within strict federal guidelines. I worked independently, but also worked within a team environment to process whole blood for hospital use. Additionally, I made the effort to learn about the individual processes at a cellular level, even though it wasn’t required. I went home and searched the internet for answers when my superiors were unable to provide them. I have since gathered my past experiences and can now teach my student assistants that advancing in the world requires a constant effort to
