My Participant's Ethnic Culture Analysis

My Participant’s ethnic culture is Nigerian. Her family’s native country is Africa. Her Oldest Brother was born in Nigeria. The rest of the siblings were born in Detroit, Michigan. One of the question I asked from the Exploring Family Culture handout, was how do you define your family’s race? Her response was blended because she consider herself and her brothers as Nigerian-Americans opposed to her parents who are just Nigerians. She feel this way because her parents upbringing were totally different than hers and her brothers. I then asked her did that cause major conflicts while growing up. She explained that their were many different conflicts because her parents tried to raise them like they were still in Nigeria. Nigerians are more strict than Americans. She also stated how her parents did not fully understand the American’s culture. For instance, her parents was not fond of the idea of high school prom and graduation. My participant said it was great to expose her parents to the American culture.
Religion

Her mom is a Healthcare Administrator at Providence Hospital and her Dad works at the hospital as a Secretary. They live in an urban area of Detroit, Michigan. They were able to send their children to college with the assistance of financial aid. My participant mentioned that they are not poor, but they are not extremely rich either. The bills are always paid and they have money saved to take family trips. Her mom just took a trip to Nigeria to visit the grandma. All of the siblings have cars as well. Her parents constantly states that they want their kids to do better than them. Her mom graduated from college but her dad dropped out of college. All of the children are striving to finish college so they can provide for their
