Many of the decisions I made in Johanna’s life were based on the interactions between my parents and I. For example, I have always been a terrible test taker and so when it came time to prepare for the ACT and SAT my parents hired a tutor. This action helped me be successful academically, however, it also showed me the amount of support I have from my parents and how they will use any resource necessary to help me succeed. This resulted in me taking the same approach when Johanna did not score as high as she would have liked on the PSAT. Furthermore, I found myself using my mom’s tactics when giving Johanna advice, especially when the issue was about boys or friends. Whenever I was in a fight with a friend, my mom would offer up her advice but would never tell me what do to. I took this same approach when Johanna and her best friend had a crush on the same guy, I offered her advice but ultimately let her figure out what to do on her own. The effect of my parents on my parenting style can be explained by Lev Vygotsky’s view of cognitive development. Per Lev Vygotsky (Feldman, 2017), cognitive development results from our encounters with other people. In other words, Vygotsky believed that individuals learn from their encounters with their peers, role models, and parents (Feldman, 2017).
