My Opinion: Year-Round Schools

Decent Essays
Year round schools are better to in my opinion. You have your free time and still work throughout the year. Schools continue to operate 180 days per year. They stretch out the 180 days over the entire year and take shorter breaks between each term.

Year round school can be a problem for some people. Not for students but for teachers also. They could have a baby at home and it could be difficult to find a babysitter for 2 weeks every 6 weeks. Kids tend to forget a lot during the summer break, so a shorter time away from school might increase retention rates. Year round schools can enrich students educational experiences. By allowing for the addition of intersessions or creative courses. But one thing about

Each year, school districts are faced with a growing population of students. The issue with this is that many districts have a shortage of school facilities, and they are limited to the amount of money they can spend on each of these facilities. To handle this issue, school districts around the world have adopted a year-round school calendar to ensure they are using these existing school facilities to their full ability. Year-round schooling arranges the breaks differently, causing students to be in school all throughout the year, rather than having three months off in the summer. In addition to maximizing the use of the schools, year-round schooling improves student learning and saves money in the long run.…

It even disrupts vacations that last 1 month or longer. 2.Budget Year-round school isn’t very good at being cheap. Just like explained in Year Round Schooling offers Benefits Over A Traditional Calendar, “Balanced year-round calendar provides a logical pacing of instructions, followed by a regular break” (Bullinger, 2008). One bad thing is that if we increase the schooling time the teachers salaries are increased (Davis, 2008), it’s not bad for the teachers but the state is losing more money. The schools will need more money to pay for the bills and pay the teachers as explained in Extending-Time Schools Benefit Students, “They shift usage of grants, or apply for new money that can be used in a variety of ways” (Davis, 2008). A benefit for the students is that their education isn’t interrupted (Bullinger, 2008) according to Year Round Schooling Offers Benefits Over a Traditional Calendar, “Year round schooling enhances learning because the learning is not interrupted by a long summer break” (Bullinger,…

Last but not least, year-round school does indeed reduce burnout in general. Scholastic.com states, “They didn’t have that bored, glazed over look of kids who have been in school for weeks on end with no breaks in sight” (1). The students and teachers weren’t bored in school because they had very frequent breaks and they always had something to look forward to. Although that sounds good, it is no match for child care problems and college tuition. It is important that are safe and have good tuition.…

This is an advantage, because students would have time to learn more. Although, most students wouldn't be able to stay focused and on task without a break, which would ultimately cause them not to do as well in school. Overall, a year round calendar would be a good option for those who are dedicated to school. However, most students excel in academics when they are given a summer break, which causes them to look forward to school and learning. The Benefits Year-Round Schooling Since the beginning of time, teaching and learning has been a detrimental part of what makes us able to innovate and experience the world around us. A form of schooling introduced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was a year round school system (Pedersen, "The History of School and Summer Vacation"). This system allowed for more days within the learning period and allotted for students to get more out of their education. Research from all the way back to a hundred years ago has shown that students tend to lose information and their footing during a traditional summer vacation (Fairchild, "Why and how communities should focus on summer learning."). The current system most public schools within the…

Before you think that year round schools have less vacation days, roughly public and year round schools have the same amount of vacation days. The days from the summer that are taken away get spread out during the schools. Which brings back the main idea which is more breaks, less stress. They won’t have the proper time to do these preferable activities. Families would not prefer year-round school becauses they also would want to spend time with kids during the summer or they want to spend family time and vacations during their break and not have to worry about multiple missing assignments and grades. It puts pressure and stress on the student and their family. It would be much more difficult and stressful to have year-round school. Summer time is meant to take a break from all of the sheets of homework given and have time to spend with your family and friends.…

Both calendars have their pros and cons when dealing with which ones benefits the students better. Year-round Schooling (2004) maintains that “year-round schools can have more positive effects on students who are deemed at risk for academic problems, such as children from low-income families or other students who might typically be low performers in school (para. 10). Others believe that there has not been enough research done on the subject to prove any of these findings as significant, and there is no credible evidence to support this hypothesis. There are many other people who see the traditional school calendar as something that has worked so far and should not be deviated from. Still, there are a plethora of mixed opinions on whether or not year-round schooling is better than the traditional method.…

Most students and parents disagree with this idea, and it comes off as a negative idea. In reality, this is not the case students who attend year round schooling actually have more time for this. They receive all kinds of breaks throughout the year that they could spend time with their friends or family and go on a family vacation at any time throughout the year not just in the summer. Little do we know year-round schooling has many more advantages than disadvantages, actually a lot of good things can come out of this. When schools had just begun, summers were necessary because children needed to help their families by working on the farm, and helping around the house.…

For parents, it is not practical. A benefit of year-round school is that the breaks are more evenly balanced over a twelve-month period instead of a nine-month period and one extra-long summer break. This is beneficial because parents can take vacation time in larger chunks and can use this time to travel or something else that requires more time. Parents should also be encouraged Because Opheim notes in an article that, “more frequent vacations contribute to better behavior (Gitlin, 1988; Loyal, 1991; Hoke, 1992). In a case study of Huntington Park High School, Jefferson County, California, Gitlin found that educators noticed immediate changes in the transition to a YRS [Year-Round School] program.…

Children benefit from year round school because they are not in a hurry to cram everything they need to know for that year in just short nine to ten months. Teachers can slow their speed and actually teach students everything they need to know not just what they need for a test, which seems to be regular in many schools. Students will not forget the education that was taught, for they will not have summer vacation time to forget about school and what they learned from it. Cooper had done experiments on children loosing education while on summer break and his results are stunning, and cooper commented that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”…
