For my old person paper I interviewed Marilyn G. Alexander. She was born on July 29th, 1931. Marilyn and her sister Virginia were the daughters of Charles and Violet Green. She grew up in Mount Vernon, New York where she spent the first 20 years of her life. Eventually, she married Lawrence Alexander and then moved to Hoffman Estates, Illinois. They had four kids; Linda, Bill, Tom, and Sue. Marilyn is currently the Grandmother of eight and the great Grandmother of five. During our interview I asked her about how her dating life was, what her first job was, what were weddings like, and what would her and her friends do for fun. The first question I asked my grandmother was, how dating was like in 1940s and was dating common. She said that growing up she didn’t date much. She was a senior in high school when she went on her first date. In the 1940s, the most common way of dating was someone setting you up on a blind date. My grandmother told me that her first date was a friend of a friend’s friend. She told me that her date didn’t have a car so he took the train. They met up at her house and her parents had to drive them or they would have to take the train if they wanted to go out. My grandmother and her first date ended up going to the movies, which back then was a big deal. She said that dates weren’t as exotic as they are today and most date’s people would just stay at home.
