My Observation Of Online Ethnography

For my ethnography I decided to conduct my observations in the J. Murrey Atkins Library, located at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Beginning at 10:34 am, March 1st, I stationed myself at a table almost directly in front of Peet’s Coffee and Tea. Different seating types were visible from my occupied location, including bar stools, booths, round coaches and metal chairs; making this the best area to take note of my surroundings.
It could be perceived instantly that the majority of students were preoccupied with their laptops. I wish to acknowledge the fact that online courses are common thus laptops are going to be necessary in order to complete assignments. Therefore, the use of laptops should not immediately be depicted as dismissive behavior. For example, one student whom was seated at one of the high stools was clearly in the midst of an online task, two binders were spread across the table and she would occasionally scan through the papers then gaze back at the screen of her laptop. She shows discipline when it comes to online distractions.

The ground floor though it was the most populated was the cleanest. No trash littered the floors, there were no pencil marks on the desks or walls and janitors constantly circulated that area. The first floor had some trashed littered her and there but was pretty decent. However, the third floor was quite disgusting and ill-kept; the table I sat at even had left over crumbs from someone’s obvious lunch break. Not to mention, there were pen and pencil marks covering the walls and sometimes to the point where it was barely recognizable. Thus, from this information I came to the conclusion that the more populated and popular an area is the cleaner it will
