Mall Observation

Many different types of people visit a local mall for various reasons. Some go by themselves while others take along a friend or family member(s). While in public, there are certain rules of behavior that are followed which are considered acceptable by society. Individuals who do not follow these norms may be shunned or suffer some type of ramification. Behavior expectations, especially sexual ones, vary by location. People generally suppress their sexual feelings while in public as they have learned that most sexual acts are not considered acceptable behavior especially at a shopping mall. One way to observe people’s behaviors while at a mall is to conduct a participant observation and take field notes (Griffitt & Hatfield, 1985). This is …show more content…
Both the food court and various areas around the mall were a part of this observation. This setting was chosen as it was convenient and enabled me to observe many different people interacting at one time. The emotional climate is that of happiness and positivity as people casually walk through the mall making purchases and eating at the food court. The demographic makeup of the participants is aged from 17 to approximately 50 years old and an almost equal mix of males and females. The ethnic makeup is primarily caucasian, Hispanic, and African-American. Most participants appeared to be middle class and single. My observation was conducted during the middle of the day on a …show more content…
The conclusions that I drew from this observation are that most people are aware of both of these types of rules of appropriate behavior at the mall. They understand that they are expected to speak in a moderate to quiet voice, walk and not run, not engage in violent or sexual acts, etc. Rules guide our conduct and allow us to determine right from wrong. Athough sexuality was once unseen in public in our culture, it has now become more acceptable and open (Yarber, 2013). So the two couples that I observed holding hands and showing affection were acting in a culturally “normal” behavior which is the standard that the majority of us use most of the time (Yarber, 2013). The behaviors that I observed related to this course in that the two couples seemed to demonstrate their attraction to one another through physical expressions such as holding hands and gazing at one another. These are socially acceptable ways that our culture shows affection in public (Yarber, 2013). “Most people will agree that holding hands and occasional tender touches or glances are better ways to show your affection than groping” (Mayne, 2015, par. 3). Setting is an essential element to consider when a person wishes to show their affection for someone. What I observed was sweet and appropriate for the mall. Both couples seem to genuinely care for each other and enjoyed each other’s company. After looking through all of our

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, desire is a “conscious impulse toward something that promises enjoyment or satisfaction in its attainment.” Whether what we want is bad or good, we are constantly attracted to being in a state of satisfaction. There are times where we struggle with making the right moral decisions because we know in the back of our minds that it is wrong. We get a satisfactory sensation when we get our hands on our strongest desire and we much prefer to feel happy rather than neglection. Bryan Spinks mentions this sensation in the perspective of a church.…

I pondered internally, I definitely realize what a movement crossing point looks like why if I have to go and stay there for 60 minutes and watch what's going on. I noticed that as people walked passed me and the person I was talking to they stared and I felt the judgment from just the looks on their faces. I felt as if the mall made me feel more judged because of the difference of environments. The people at Target seemed more willing to take time to talk to you than the people at the mall. Majority of the people either ignored me altogether or seemed really confused when I broke personal space.…

The Microaggresion-Interaction Situation Three observations, over varying lengths of time, were completed of the interaction situation in three different LGBT friendly establishments — Tribe, Play, and Trax which are jock, twink, and bear friendly respectively. The assumptions are that the interactions will not be as blatant as online; however, I predict that there will be violations of the assumptions. The interaction situation was similar at each site as there were parallel interaction behaviors even though these were distinct places that catered to different subcultures (jock/fit, twink, bear/bigger). Some…

How people react towards someone who breaks an everyday society’s idea of a social norm can vary in many different ways all depending on the situation, the people surrounding the incident and who is breaking the norm. I, wearing pajamas in public setting such as the mall, my mother office, in my neighborhood and general popular places around town caused many to quite surprising reactions from my peers, family, strangers and friends. Sometimes people’s reactions are quite subtle and they tend not to show any interest in a change of action at all. However, at other times a person reaction to an alteration in the social norm can be quite large and exaggerated. Walking in public settings in a town that I grew up in (e.g. shopping centre, squares,…

Each group of people have their set of beliefs, behaviors, and the way they do life that works best for them. Europe and North America have entirely different perspectives and behaviors that are incorporated into the culture for each of their geographic locations. Zooming in a little tighter in these areas, Germany and the United States each have their own unique set of values when it comes to, their social etiquette, self-policing, work/family balance, and even the way they engage in courtship to find a mate. The way the Germans and Americans have shaped the norms within their culture are a direct result of their values. These norms are just activities reflecting their opinion of how the “world should be, rather than the assumptions about the way the world really is.”…

“The Science of Shopping” by Malcolm Gladwell is an article well written. This article is full of information and facts about all the things that consumers do, that they would have never noticed about themselves. This article is based off the experiments and observations performed by Paco Underhill, who is a former geographer of Manhattan. Underhill places surveillance in stores to analyze the typical shopper to define how they shop and to explain how the retailers need to respond to their shopper’s behavior. A few main focuses on this article are the Decompression Zone, the Invariant Rights and the downshift factor.…

Norms and Folkways took place at the mall as well. Standing in line at the fitting rooms or the register check out line, walking normally instead of running, saying excuse me or using polite manners, holding the doors open for the people who are behind you, and greeting others by communicating and making facial expressions. Meanwhile, there were violations of the Norms and Folkways. Speaking loudly and shouting just to communicate, opening unpurchased items, dancing inside of a store, children behaving independently, and are left unsupervised. The mall also represents subcultures and countercultures.…
