Special Education Observation

I conducted my observations at Hollingsworth Elementary School. It is the elementary school I went to. I wanted to go here because I haven’t remembered seeing any students in a Special Education before. I was assigned to two teachers; Mrs. Wilson with Pre-kindergarten and Special Education Pre-kindergarten, and Mr. Learned with Autism. Both teachers have either an assistant or co-teacher. What I found interesting is that Mrs. Wilson is autistic and she teaches preschoolers. Her teaching is definitely something. Especially, for her group of students. It can be seen that at home they don’t have a consistent schedule, enforcement of manners, and aren’t afraid of their moms and dads finding out if they did something wrong. It’s especially concerning …show more content…
There is red, yellow, and green tracker for the students on the board for their behavior. There is also a time out corner that was used for one of the students for one of the days I observed. The greatest thing was when one of the student’s best friend came to school. She was so keen on the idea of her best friend being with her at school. Another thing I noticed, is that they tend to repeat the question, or what they are saying. They do self-correct themselves even if they don’t talk much. It seems to be a struggle to get them to talk. One of the activities Mr. Learned used songs, and in another word bingo. In the word bingo game, he would write the word on the board then guide them through the sounds using his finger. He would say it first, then together, then the students by themselves. They love to ask questions though, and repeat the information they learned. When they got a bingo, they would have to say bingo, and ask for their prize, usually, a bear cracker or an M&M. Everything is to a strict schedule and is repetitive. One of my most interactive times was when Mr. Learned have to leave for a bit and it was just me and the assistant, the student got a bit rambunctious. I ended up bringing them to the reading center and reading to them. Some of the students were interested, and others

Recently I did my observation at Chime Institute 's Schwarzenegger Community School in a first-grade class that consisted of about twenty students both those of who have disabilities and do not. These students are typically six years old and at the time there was one teacher and one assistant who led the class. In the classroom, there was also one paraprofessional for the student with special needs. The mother of the child was also there guiding her daughter and helping with any questions the paraprofessional had regarding her daughter 's needs. For the majority of my observation, I was in a class setting…

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

For many students with disabilities, the key to success in the classroom is when they are provided with appropriate supports. These appropriate supports include adaptations, accommodations, and modifications of the classroom instruction and other school-related activities. This semester, I received my field placement in a self-contained classroom at New Haven Elementary School. My host class consists of one teacher, four paraprofessionals, and seven students. The majority of my students have been diagnosed with Autism and Intellectual disabilities.…

To start off I want to explain what brought me to this class. I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…

This documentary, Educating Peter, followed a special needs boy with Down Syndrome named Peter into a third-grade classroom at a public school. Peter was enrolled in a traditional school because federal law stated that children with special needs must be educated with regularly developing students in traditional schools. Originally, Peter was in a special needs school with autistic/special needs students. In the beginning when I first started watching this film I had mixed thoughts. In my personal opinion I didn’t understand why at the expense of other students who are forced to deal with Peter's unpredictability, or that Mrs. Stallings must spend extra time with Peter--not on academics, but simply trying to integrate him into the classroom…

Students in this classroom looked very lazy to me, they were not rushing on completing their work. I didn’t observed much motivation from a teacher, which is very important for students to set up goals and be motivated to achieve them. In my opinion, they were getting too much waver from being in this program, they looked very normal to me, and few of them had developmental delays but otherwise they looked disinterested, which was very sad to…

Introduction Special education has made significant changes over the past years, partly due to the fact that people have stood up and made a change for the better toward children with disabilities. Children are no longer put into segregated hospitals and left to die and forgotten about. Children for many years were labeled as unlovable and a disgrace and hid away from society. Parents were faced with humiliation and public scorning for having a child with a disability and lived in fear. People are now more widely educated and have advanced over the past century to include children with disabilities as part of society and not simply a disgrace to be swept under the rug.…

The graduate course, Autism Spectrum Disorders, was a very beneficial course, not just professionally, but personally as well. As stated in the textbook, “For those entering the field of special education, the changes are probably greater that you will win the lottery than not have a student with ASD during the course of your career”, (E. Amanda Boutot, 2011, p. 5). What an impactful statement! As a professional, it is imperative to have a strong understanding of the symptoms, characteristics, and behaviors associated with individuals diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Educational professionals also need to be aware of the every changing research, trends, and educational approaches and strategies, related to ASD.…

It was something I did not plan for. For instance in the listening micro lesson, some of them asked questions or asked me to rewind the audio file while they were supposed to be listening to it and do not disturb their colleagues. I have learned that I have to put some rules from the beginning of the session. For instance, I should tell students to write down their questions and wait till the end of the audio file. Besides, these like-real situations helped me to be more comfortable standing up in front of…
