In this photo, a crowd of people are walking down a city street. In the background, there are stores seen along the streets, the clearest ones in this image being a furniture and shoe store. You can see many African Americans dressed in what appears to be dressy clothing. Most of the ones towards the front of the crowd are all holding books. My first impression of these books was that they were Bibles. I thought this simply because of the way they were dressed. I assumed they were headed either towards or from church. During the civil war blacks and whites were not seen together. In this picture, there are not any whites seen walking with the crowd. In fact, I did not notice any whites at all when I first saw the photo. However, in the background
