My Observation Of Firefighting

Decent Essays
On 04-07-2017 at 0055 hours I was dispatched to 1820 Woodrow in reference to a structure fire. Upon my arrival I observed heavy smoke coming from the residence. I made contact with Nicholas Williams who was the next door neighbor. Williams had a garden hose spraying water on the fire through a hole in the north side of the residence. Williams advised that the residence had been vacant and was unaware of anyone inside. PBFD arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

Williams stated he heard tapping or moving on his porch opened the door and didn't see anything. Williams advised 20min later he heard an explosion and seen the house next door was on fire and called 911.

The Great Fire Chicago in October 8, 1871, was a city ready to burn like a fireplace and the author Jim Murphy showed enough evidence to show it’s a city ready to burn. Also in the book you could see the fire from miles, but they didn’t think it was something to worry about. In the book he tells you most of the city was made of wood. Such as “houses, roads, sidewalks, and even companies because they didn’t have enough money to make it out of stone”.…

Fire service culture needs to change because too many firefighters are injured or killed because of simple things like not wearing seat belts or not wearing proper protective gear. Firefighters are even defending themselves in court due to cases of harassment or discrimination. It must be possible to change the culture. All of these bad outcomes are preventable, but they need to be made at the department level and not just at an individual level.…

One of the principle William uses is that the topic is an everyday subject. The poem, much like most imagist poems, is talking about something that is in everyday life. One can draw that Williams is talking about a fire truck in his poem with words like, “....fire truck moving tense unheeded... (6-9)” The fire truck is something in one's life that would not come as a surprise if one ever saw it.…

Warning signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and firefighter suicide Fire department officers that present information on warning signs of suicide and PTSD to their firefighters will reduce the amount of affected firefighters by these two behavior issues each year. Warning signs are designed for family, and coworkers, however, they could also be for friends. Warning signs can just be another tool to protect our firefighters, time is going by so fast that co-workers do not recognize that their fellow firefighter may be acquiring thoughts of suicide or post-traumatic stress disorder. To provide help quicker to these firefighters- co-workers, supervisors, and possibly management should have a good idea of how this firefighter acts normally…
