My Observation Of Early Childhood Education

My son, Hanzel was less than 2 years old when he was diagonosed with autism. He had delayed language and absence of eye contact. From pre-k to grade 7, our school district sent Hanzel to BOCES. He sturggled with learning skills and was shifted from one school to another. Currently, he is 18 years old attending Lynbrook High school, ungraded in a self contain class. Hanzel needs constant supervision and support because of poor cognitive skills. He has no sense of time, poor retention, no safety skills, can not navigate in the community and can not self advocate due to poor communication skills.

ADL Hanzel needs help with simple daily living tasks. Hanzel has to be awaken everyday for school. He has to be told to clean himself, use the bathroom and brush his teeth. Water temperature has to be adjusted for him because he has the high risk to burn himself with hot water. If not prompted to finish up taking a bath, he stays in the tub for hours. He is not able to turn on the stove. He can not slice bread of cut a roll bagel or meat because of his awkwardness. He can not remember how long to warm up food in the microwave. He will not remember to use mittens when retrieving food from the oven/microwave. He will can not order food. He does not make purchases at a store/grocery. He does not know what to buy and how much is the change after his purchase. He can not make a balance budget. He has a poor concept of money.

Social Hanzel does not initiate conversation. His conversation is immature with inappropriate private topic. He has never had a friend. He is unable to connect and maintain friendship. He can not read social cues. He does not think of other's thoughts and feelings. He does not answer phone of engage in independent conversation over the phone. He does not enjoy participating in family function, he would rather stay in his room and pace back and forth.
