My Observation Of School

Part I - The Community and School Culture My school of choice to do my observation is Lorenzo de Zavala Elementary Science Environmental Academy located in Grand Prairie south of Interstate 20. Zavala sets on a land adjusted to Jackson Middle School. The school is directly impacted by residential houses and an open field. In the back of Zavala there is a garden and a greenhouse. Next to the garden there is a gated play area that has a basketball court for the public and remains open daily under surveillance 24 /7. However, there is a fence that separates the basketball court from the garden and across the street, directly on the other side of the garden is the school’s playground area that can only assessable from the school. The neighborhood …show more content…
The building operators are doing an excellent job of keeping the school clean. The first thing I noticed before entering the building was the perpetual care of the lawn. The outside was clean free from litter and spotless. Inside the building was the same continuous tidiness. It was not hard to distinguish the learning environment of the school. It is a science academic academy that represents a STEM learning environment. This school is geared toward science specifically and I was impressed with their greenhouse and the upkeep of the garden and plants that is located in the back of the building near the playground. Just entering the building gave me a warm welcome friendly inviting feeling. The floors were clean and shiny, walls had no graffiti and the halls did not have trash on them on them. There were banners hanging to represent different colleges and awards displayed the school had received. The building layout is simple and it is easy to find your way from one grade level to the next. Each grade hall is represented by a different theme. The classrooms all are represented by a specific theme with a photo and bio of the teacher. The cafeteria is located near the center of the building with the library down the hall slightly to the left of the main office. The students are well behaved and K-3rd graders walk down the hall with their hands behind their back keeping to the right side …show more content…
However, I am employed on the north side of Grand Prairie, and the climate is totally opposite. Thinking in line with patterns and themes, the district shares the same theme across the board, but each school has their own climate. Being on both sides of the city, I have learned that teachers, administrators, parents, and community play a vital role in the success of all students. The more affluent side may have more resources but as teachers we must instill in every child it is not where you come from but, where you are going. Zavala teachers are friendly and caring and that shows in their teaching. The demographics on the south side is different from the north side. The students have parental support and there is cohesiveness between the teachers, and other staff members; and that makes a difference in a child’s academy successful. I was able to collect items from the school that promotes a variety of themes and working with the community. Zavala is a school that believes in helping the community and giving back. I was able to collect a variety of artifacts from the school. My first artifact is canned –food –drive flyer from the 4th grade class. Another is a letter thanking Dr. Hunkapillar one of the administrators from our Education Center for sponsoring a bus to the College of Veterinary

I believe that the school's location within the Cobb County area is close to a suburban or rural area because there is development but is not a major city such as Kennesaw. The previous data collected and my experience from visiting today reflects a sense of need for education in the area. The classroom had approximately 25-30 students in this small area. Although, the classroom seemed cramped the teacher worked with the materials and “tools” she was given. Many challenges that teachers in this school could possibly face is the problem of low-income families [referring to the high percentage of free and reduced lunches].…

The author and speaker of School is a Japanese woman who moved from Japan to earn her college education in America, named Kyoko Mori. Ever since she graduated, she has published three books and many different essays to establish her reputation as a well renowned author in the world of literature. In 1999, Mori decided to write a novel to describe the experiences she and others close to her had in America and Japan by comparing the two. In this excerpted chapter of Mori 's book, she significantly explains the differences between the American and Japanese education systems to bring a sense of realization to the middle class, educated writers and teachers that have interests in education and culture, that school and "the real world" are the same.…

The Sanctuary of School The essay I chose to write was over the short article of “The Sanctuary of School” by Lynda Barry. In this story it talks about the author Lynda Barry’s experience with the school from a young age. She talks about growing up in a home with her mom and her dad having money issues, relatives that kept moving in, her brother and her sleeping on the couch, and the constant fighting going on. She explains how she didn’t feel safe at home so she talks about school being a safe haven for her, and how lucky she was that she had Mrs. LeSane and Mr. Gunderson.…

Ethos- is the school’s values and beliefs, the schools philosophy and the atmosphere of the school. In working practice this might reflect in religious images on display in Faith Schools for example and the way certain festivities are celebrated in a school. Staff and pupils should reflect a school’s ethos in their attitude, there should be a positive atmosphere and people should take pride in their surroundings and be happy with the way the leaning takes place. Mission- or Motto, is the schools intention as set out by the Head Teacher it will also overlap with the values, vision and aims…

The good thing about this schools that I like is will motivate the students and tell them what exactly what to do also the teacher would help and see what every student is doing but the only thing is that the teacher do not gives any ideas to students when a students are not sure about an answer for a question. Also the teacher does not have the control of the classroom when students get noisy or get up from their desk. Some students are noisy and annoying and it’s very hard for a person to deal with so many students at the same time when they are noisy. I remember back in the days in high school some of the student were noisy and annoying or just throwing papers and it was hard for a teacher to take the control of the class. She just called the securities from the school to take them out the class.…

The Belton School District would benefit greatly from an alternative education program. Currently the Belton High School offers a credit recovery class, where students who are struggling can take or retake courses online. While the credit recovery program has shown to benefit some, its impact is not adequate. An alternative education program would be necessary for all K-12 students in the Belton School District. Alternative education is more than just sitting a student behind a computer.…

One of the major problems that our socioeconomic system produces is conformity. The production of such a characteristic in students lead to several class issues as they grow older. Anyon supports the notion of produced conformity in schooling through her study of students that belong to a certain socioeconomic status. Students belonging to working class schools were taught to memorize formulas, follow procedures, take orders, and receive knowledge. Evident through the particular pedagogy in the math class, children were told the definition of terms in two digit division, how to solve such a problem using a fixed protocol, and to memorize the information through rote practice (167).…

To be honest, I hate school with a passion, yet I love learning as much as living. As a child, schooling created a feeling of loneliness and sadness that echoed throughout my life, even now. I didn’t meet the standard levels for literacy and was separated from my classmates in elementary school for special reading and writing classes. Also the lack of freedom to say and move the way I wished to, and the rebellion that stemmed out of me in middle school due to these limitations. Finally, the conforming in high school to appease my mother, friends that drove me over the edge, yet even now I feel the same bull-crap in college.…

As for school experiences, there were similarities between education in the United States but there were also a lot of differences I noticed. The first big difference is what they call each level of schooling. Here we call them grades but in Malawi, they call them standards. Standard one through eight make up primary school, the equivalent of elementary and middle school here. They refer to, what we call pre-school, as necessary school and Pempho explained that when families don’t have money to send their child to necessary school, they just wait for them to turn four and enroll them into standard one.…

Many times throughout a school day you may hear a student compare the halls and rooms of Woodbury High to the interior of a prison, and they're correct. The hallways and many of the classrooms are windowless and made of painted brick with no way to feel or see the outdoors, so why not bring the outdoors indoors? Interior landscaping essentially means adding plants and other decorative items such as fountains, rocks, and lighting. It can improve the school environment by filtering the air or by making the school look great while changing the atmosphere at little expense.…

Finally, when we make a mistakes and learn from that it means we are having a new path for ourselves so, in this point we are similar to the curriculum.…
