Nursing Career Essay

If someone were to ask me two years ago what I wanted to be and why, my answer would be completely different than it is today. As already having my bachelor’s degree and being in the ABSN program, I have had a lot of time to reflect on what I wanted to do and why nursing is defiantly the career for me. I always thought that I wanted to be an occupational therapist and that was what I was going to do with my career. It wasn’t until two summers ago when I figured out nursing was the path for me. My best friend became sick with encephalitis while studying abroad in Austria. She was flown home on a private plane and taken to a hospital in Cumming, Ga. The four domains (person, environment, health, and nursing) shape the way a nurse goes about their practice. When it comes to the person part of nursing, I think the most important thing to remember is that each patient is different and each patient should be treated with respect and kindness no matter what the situation may be. They are putting their lives in your hands and you as a nurse need to be held to that responsibility at all times. I my opinion, the environment in which you place a patient in can determine the outcome of the patients over all wellbeing. You want to make the environment is a safe place where the patient can feel comfortable expressing themselves and putting their trust in you as a nurse. The health domain is the overall state of the patient. Although they may not be healthy when they come to you in need, it is your job to do all you can to try and improve their health as best as you can. Nursing is more than just caring for the patient on a daily basis. It has to do with communicating with the patient, having active listening skills, educating the patient and family involved, having a caring touch and much more.
