As my next customer approaches the register, I glance at the time, “thank God,” I thought, noticing only one hour until my shift ends. Although it was only my third day on the job, the multitude of mistakes that only I could possibly make crippled me as I dreaded what could happen with the nearing customer. Her walk and talk communicates an air of arrogance, and her curt response to my question, “How are you today?” affirmed this. Thankfully, I completed the transaction, managing to make the small talk that is expected of me, but my uneasiness apparantly alarms the customer who looks doubtful at my actions.I hand her cash back, only to be notified that I had forgotten her change amid the jumble of bills, bags, and the receipt. The interpersonal skills I learned from conversing with customers while checking them out, noting the beauty of a piece of wall art that they selected, or inquiring as to what they intened to do with that fascinating petrified wood table, has and surly will continue to impact my commucations with peers. Confronting my managers to amend my work schedule after repeadedly being over-worked amidst a busy junior year, although terrifying at first, taught me that with respect and confidence on my part, I shouldn’t continually suffer from feeling inferior. Learning the ins and outs of a major corporation influenced my nterests for future careers. As an introvert, and naturally a listener, I take a step back and assess situations as a whole. The policies and business model of this company intrigue and have ignited a passion within me to simply understand why. Why is this our policy? Why do I have to handle transactions in this way? I now envision my future incorporating the lessons I’ve learned observing how my company works; from its shortcomings I’ve already begun to brainstorm solutions for new business
