I began writing for the school newspaper as a freshman because I enjoyed writing. I discovered another interesting aspect of newswriting: gathering information through interviews. Interviewing a subject requires analyzing their responses to determine what questions could lead to interesting, important information. newswriting improved my communication skills. I learned to get to the essence of what my interview subjects were saying and think of appropriate follow-up questions off the cuff. Articles for newspapers need to be readable and concise, so as a beginner I had to develop a leaner prose style.
