My First Day At A New Job

It was a cool October morning in Fort Benning, Georgia. I was busy scrambling around to get myself ready for my first day at a new job. Inside I was feeling a whirlwind of emotions, wondering if I had made the right decision to join back into the workforce. Thoughts were running through my head, would I be able to handle leaving my toddler at daycare all day for the very first time? Would I be able to adjust to a new job title in a whole new environment? Would I be able to learn the job quickly and would I be successful? Nevertheless I put on the brand new pair of scrubs I had bought and walked out the front door, prepared to see what the eye doctors office environment would be like. As I walked in the back door of the eye doctors office and made my way to the front desk area I would be working at, I immediately noticed how different things were in an office setting as opposed to the bars and restaurants I was familiar with working in. I walked into the front desk room and saw a middle-aged woman with a name tag that read “Robin”. She was sitting down at her desk diligently working on her computer. Shadowing a variety of hospitalists gave me the opportunity to observe the broad spectrum of patient care. I witnessed firsthand the anguish and pain associated with the loss of a patient. I learned that while many diagnoses may be identical, no two patients are the same. Additionally I was introduced to an aspect of patient care that often remains unmentioned; the task of updating and completing patients’ medical records which may be a tedious, yet extremely vital aspect of patient care. Overall, my shadowing experiences solidified my decision to continue my journey of becoming a physician to treat patients in all aspects required in medical care.…
