My new identity is a Hispanic/Latina woman between the ages of 35 and 50 (413). Some stereotypical things about a Latina woman are that they are “hot-tempered”, “fiery”, and/or “spicy”. For example, in class we talked about Sofia Vergara, who is a prominent Latina woman in the media spot light quite often. She plays the role of a fiery Latina woman in the TV show “Modern Family”. This TV show received backlash because of this stereotype. In addition to that, a Latina woman is looked at like sexual or exotic object. Most men stereotype a Latina woman as curvaceous and being able to dance and move her hips well. It’s degrading towards a Latina woman. To illustrate, we can go back to Sofia Vergara; most men remember her breasts more than her intelligence or acting skill. Also, not to mention, men believe that a Latina woman can cook. Now, that is not only expected in a Latina woman, but all women of races as well. Furthermore, a Latina and Latino family is stereotyped as big with copious of cousins; however, that is not always the case. Ethnicity does not play a role in how much you choose to expand your family, but people still believe in this stereotype.

Christina Yang performed a surgery on Dr. Sheppard’s heart. Throughout this show, Christina Yang is the most promising surgeon there is; however, this is the perfect example of a stereotype. Asians or Asian/Americans are always depicted as the smart ones. Every doctor at the Seattle Grace Hospital trust Christina Yang’s judgment, but they do not trust the judgment of other residents. What if this show had a Latina woman who was very intellectual like Christina Yang? Would this Latina character being taken just as seriously as Christina Yang? Sadly, we probably would not be taken seriously because that is not how we are represented in media. It is a constant struggle because we are smart and hard working just like Christina
