My Name Searching Research Paper

Improved Essays
The Story of My Search Not once have I ever really thought about where my name originated or how deep of a meaning it had. I knew the basics like, my mother named me after my grandfather, and that my middle name came from my mother, but that was the extent of my knowledge. If it was not for my English teacher making me do an assignment researching what my means, and where it is most popular, I still would not know, if it was not for school I am sure a lot of kids would not know these things. I dug through multiple books in the library for two days, gathered a large amount of knowledge from the Internet, and questioned family members. I researched my first name by conducting an interview amongst family members, middle names using a book source, …show more content…
I realize now that I should have cared all along. Many people could care less about their name, before doing this paper that is how I felt, I did not care one bit where my name originated or what famous person had it, but now that I have researched it I want to get my hands on every possible fact about my name that I can. Even though this paper is over I will never want to stop learning about my name and everything that is connected to it. Is my name something people call me? Is my name something people know me by? Is my name important to me? My name is my link to the past. If I were to do something bad, yes it would tarnish the family name, but people change, however people always remember the name, and the actions that go with the name, not the person. People choose not to remember the good things I will do, they will try and get a hold of every single bad thing I did. It doesn’t matter what people think of you as long as you know the truth. “I’m not my name. My name is something I wear, like a shirt. It gets worn. I outgrow it, I change it.” – Jerry

My friends started calling me Peggy after a debate over the meaning of the name Margaret in my sophomore theology class. My class was doing a project on each of our own names and I had said that Margaret came from the Greek word for “pearl.” My friend Isobel, who speaks some German, claimed that the actual origin was the German word for “Daisy.” I argued that, since my name is Margaret, I would know the origin. We resolved the dispute by searching “Margaret” on Google and learning that the origin was in fact Greek.…
