"My Name," by Sandra Cisneros, she states the reasons why the name Esperanza do not repents who she is as a person and why she wants to change her name to one that identifies who she really is and represent her identity. One’s name does not have the power to shapes his/her identity and mold one’s destiny in life. A name uses to identify his/her at birth, which our parents given to us are a sense of ownership throughout his/her lifetime. Many stand behind the name because of their self-accomplishment

Especially family names. Names can give a sense of confidence and likewise a sense of shame. Family names for instance; once a family has established themselves in a specific area to be reputable and renowned it is common that all future generations of this family be held to that standard. The Kennedy's, the Bush's are all well known for their contributions in politics...this may so be considered a family thing. Can you imagine the ridicule a Kennedy may experience if they didn’t want to pursue a career in politics? Names have power. In the case Ms. Quindlen and Ms. Cisneros, it is clear that their names mean quit a lot to them. Whether a name has the power however to shape one’s self identity and destiny it is in Ones opinion a bit of an exaggeration. Who a person is and want to be should not be based too heavily on outside influences. The choice to allow a name to mean so much is a personal decision and in One’s opinion it shows a low self-esteem. I agree 100% with Quindlen in her decision to keep her family name upon marriage because her name is a part of who she is and being married does not change that. But for the story of Esperanza my opinion is slightly different. This is so because Esperanza is not her name, it is her great- grandmother's name. Why did her parents think that she didn’t deserve the right to her own name but to be names after someone let alone someone in the
