In “My Name,” Esperanza says her great grandmother was a “wild horse of a woman” who didn’t want to marry but was forced into it (Cisneros ). A quote to support this would be " Out back is a small garage for the car we don't own yet," ( page 4) She isn't too happy that this was her first actual house but, she is still being optimistic about what is yet to come.…

Esperanza’s initial expectations for her new house were raised too high, and dealt a heavy blow to her morale when they went unfulfilled. When Esperanza recalls her parents saying that one day they would have a house with “at least three washrooms” and “a great big yard and grass growing without a fence” but then realizes that the house “is not the way they told it at all” (Cisneros 4). Esperanza's hopes were raised for nothing.…

Similes help Esperanza, and a lot of people, to compare situations or items she comes across. Another instance where Esperanza envys something large and wishes it was her dream house was the following. She was describing her neighbor's house and said she owned “a building as big as whale”(Cisneros 12). If she calls a building a whale it is most likely positive since whales are usually seen as majestic. Esperanza has trouble making friends because she’s very scared of growing attached to things and has a low self-esteem like most teens.…

The choice to allow a name to mean so much is a personal decision and in One’s opinion it shows a low self-esteem. I agree 100% with Quindlen in her decision to keep her family name upon marriage because her name is a part of who she is and being married does not change that. But for the story of Esperanza my opinion is slightly different. This is so because Esperanza is not her name, it is her great- grandmother's name. Why did her parents think that she didn’t deserve the right to her own name but to be names after someone let alone someone in the…
