My NSBE Experience

Decent Essays
The first booth I visited was NSBE. I talked to Elizabeth Agwaife, who answered all of my questions. The purpose of NSBE is “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community”. Though the B stands for black, it is open to all races. Yearly, they host the Feed the Culture BBQ, which was on September 9th. There’s free food, music, games, and more. It’s their version of a “welcome” event. They also host many corporate mixers, in which one can sit down with representatives from companies about jobs, internships, requirements, etc. Elizabeth told be that every single person in NSBE receives an internship. NSBE also periodically hosts their own job

Why are you interested in ASB? What do you hope to gain from this experience? I want to participate in ASB because it would allow me to help people I normally would not come into contact with. There are other things I could do for Spring Break, however, the most satisfying thing I could do would be volunteer my time to a worthy cause. When first starting at Cream City Foundation, I obviously did not know anything about it or anyone involved with it. I was first in contact with Emmet, the foundation’s development associate, simply to introduce myself and to ask for Maggie’s contact information. Maggie, who I work with the most, is a great and easy person to talk to and work with. Maggie and I are able to bounce ideas off of each other and build off one another when working on my research project. I was also able to meet Eddie my first day in the office, however each time that I have been back at the site, Eddie has not been there, so I have not been able to get to know him as much as I would have hoped for.…

Kate, you made some interesting points regarding the decision made by the NLRB. I particularly enjoyed your discussion regarding the stakeholders in this case. The players, coaches, and university itself are definitely the immediate stakeholders, as the case dealt with Northwestern solely. That being said, I agree with you that other NCAA FBS schools are stakeholders as well due to the fact that the decision could impact how other schools could potentially unionize. As for your discussion regarding the financial perspective of the decision, there are a couple points that I would like to add.…

press my interest in becoming a Diversity Intern at Amherst College. When I applied to the Amherst Diversity Open Houses (DIVOH) senior year of high school, I was just starting to think about the college process. Coming from a small town over ninety percent Caucasian, I was drawn to Amherst’s emphasis on diversity and wanted to visit my first liberal arts college. Once I arrived, I was astonished by the experiences of my fellow DIVOH students and became overwhelmed at how heterogeneous yet close-knit the Amherst community seemed. I felt like I belonged.…

The events that led up to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 would be a day we will never forget and it would go down in history as one of the most devastating terrorist attacks on our soil. How would our government respond to this attack and ensure that it does not happen again? How does the Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI), National Security Branch(NSB), meet these challenges? The National Security Branch(NSB), was created in September 2005 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This was in “response to a presidential directive to establish a “National Security Service” that combine the mission, capabilities, and resources of the FBI’s counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and intelligence” (fbi.gov, 2005).…

The club is compromised of an open-minded, diverse collaboration of youth who diligently fight for racial equality. Ethnic tension has always been extremely prevalent at my school--students often choose to segregate themselves by hues of skin pigmentation. At the root of this tension is restless silence on the most controversial topics, and thus Black Student Union was created to spark intelligent dialogue and debate on racial issues. Growth flourishes at every meeting, newfound respect and comprehension generated between students of vastly divergent backgrounds. I channel my pride in my black heritage into the empowerment of local black students and education on cross-racial understanding that takes place at BSU.…

I met with many employers and practiced forming connections. But the main two, Charter Manufacturing and Kapco, Inc. were ones that caught my attention. They seemed very informative and encouraging. I introduced myself as a freshman, pre-buisness marketing major hoping to make my way back home to Hawaii and that was enough for them to get excited, helping me to find internships. Many of them though, were for Juniors and Seniors which reassured me that I was among older business majors and ahead of other freshman.…
