My Musical Overview Reflection

Decent Essays
When I compare it to the Revue, Spring Awakening felt less rushed at first, but as we got to the last month it felt like we were running out of time and too far behind. I think the main reason I felt this urgency is because this year is my first in the course and I wasn’t sure how to judge our progress. It of course came together in time.
My Musical Overview Presentation group, so far, feels like we’re moving at a good pace. After talking to our senior members, it seems that we are progressing faster than last year and I really hope we stay focussed throughout.
My preference with group work widely depends on the members but when I reflect on the work I’ve done in the past with both teacher-directed shows and student-run shows I think I prefer

Robert Elliot’s Our World Our Music gives an elaborate answer to the question what is music? Elliot focuses on the history of music and the social changes that were the catalyst for all these unique sounds we hear today. He defines music as “the universal language (1)” continuously implying how impactful and connecting music has been throughout time. The first instrument was discovered in 41,000 B.C and it resembled the flute (1). Although the instruments that make the musical sounds are important, one must fully understand form and structure because they are the two key elements of music.…

    Third Music Critique

For the third music critique I am going to talk about the performances of Gunnar Biggs and Bill Bradburry. First of all, I must say this was my favorite performance of the semester so far. I love the bass and it amazes me how beautiful the mandolin plays music. The musician who played the bass was Gunnar while the mandolin was played Bill. They both played Irish traditional music, however in their performance they improvised solos when usually you don’t in Irish traditional music.…

Being a senior in showchoir is a challenge! Many of the underclassmen look to you for advice or seek help when they need it. My leadership skills were also pushed last year and this year for “Dancing with the Teachers”, which is a show the showchoir puts on early in the school year. We are split into groups of about 6 or 7 out of the 40 or so members, and then we must select a teacher to be in each of our groups. We, being the seniors, then have to create a mix of songs and a dance to perform in this show.…

Analysis of Excerpts of Representative Composers As mentioned earlier in this chapter, polymodality can be traced back to the baroque period. Figure 1.3 shows an excerpt of J. S. Bach’s Four Duets No. 2 BWV 303, measures 43-46. This is an example of contrapuntal writing, where Bach creates a canon a perfect fourth lower from the top voice. The upper melody is composed in a D melodic minor scale, and the lower voice is written in A melodic minor. Mosco Carner states that “Bach in contrast to most modern composers, is here as much concerned with the vertical factor as he is with the horizontal.”…

We have been working on our small Ensemble group project. The ensembles are made up of different instrumentation. We did not get to choose our groups so it wasn't always easy to work together. During the project we learned a song all together and perform it in front of the class. Our Song had to have all the right rhythms, articulations, good tempo, and dynamics that stand out.…

In My Experience: A Reflection on the Approach to Music Theory Never have I experienced a colder bucket of water to the face than when I had my first music theory class, ever. I’ll spare you the backstory and just say it did not go well for me at all. I thought I was learning the new information but instead I was a horse with blinders running a race where I had already been lapped three times and by the time I looked up I was lost.…

For my musical ethnography, I was originally going to attend a showing of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, but it ended up being sold out last minute. At that point, I began to worry because that was the only event I had planned to attend. As my worry was starting to progress, I remembered, and also took a quick glance at the types of events we could attend and saw that it said we could attend a religious service. I quickly looked up services in my area for the next day and came across a website called “WON Buddhism of North Carolina”. It peaked my interest and I found out that a service was going on the next day in Chapel Hill, NC which is fairly close to me since I reside at home.…

I first gained an interest in music in elementary school music class. After playing recorders and learning about the history of music, I was inspired to learn as many different instruments as possible. I began piano lessons in third grade, and started learning cornet a year later. After many years of attending music camps, playing in school and church bands, joining marching band and drumline, and experimenting on my own, I have grown immensely as a musician. My main instruments are trumpet/cornet, piano, marimba, and ukulele.…

Music teachers all over the world today argue and discuss what genre is best to teach students to. A large portion of teachers usually narrows it down between two decisions in genre choice and those are Jazz and Classical. While both genres give exceptional lessons they both have differences at what’s important for a student to learn. Mastery of both of these genres would prepare someone for almost any musical situation a musician could come across but people still assume one is better than the other. What is it about these genre choices that cause musicians and teachers to be divided and which one is really the right choice when learning an instrument?…

    Best Concert Reflection

I feel that this concert has been my best concert since my arrival at the University for a variety of reasons. The primary reason I enjoy being in choir and singing is the rewarding feelings I have when we finally are able to present to the audience what we have worked so hard towards the entire semester. What many people who don 't participate in a choral ensemble is the amount of work in class and outside of class that we put in as singers into our work. It 's a long-term process of trying again and again until we get it right and ultimately being satisfied with whatever we end up presented at the end of the night. Music for me is an escape from the hectic and sometimes stressful reality of school and work; being able to come to a class that allows me a safe environment to freely express myself and relax for a couple hours has been one of the most exciting parts of this class and of the concert.…

As a music educator, I believe that student learning happens in several ways; many that are transferable to education in general. Based on the philosophies set forth by Reimer (2003), Elliot (1995), and Small (1998), students should be able to learn through high quality aesthetic experiences, praxial experiences where application of acquired knowledge and skill sets that are central to school to everyday life, and social experiences inside and outside the classroom to best interact with society as positively as possible. The process of learning should be presented in a natural, spiral, and cyclical way; allowing students to progress at a steady pace and feel safe to revisit or explore concepts that still need comprehension. Additionally, the process of learning should be paced to allow students to apply what they have learned in practical applications inside the classroom to make for life-long learning skills for life.…

    Music In The Modern Era

In the modern era, musicians continue to play music that is reminiscent of the past. While new music is continuously produced, there is a desire to keep the musical pieces created by our ancestors alive. To honor the past, some artists have created new music that reflects the classical and baroque styles. In these pieces, the artists are free to use whichever instruments they please to create their musical effect. When a non-early music ensemble performs non-early music in the modern era, they tend to use the combination of both modern instruments, including strings and winds, and early instrument such as the harpsichord to perform early music.…
