Musical Ethnography Reflection

For my musical ethnography, I was originally going to attend a showing of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, but it ended up being sold out last minute. At that point, I began to worry because that was the only event I had planned to attend. As my worry was starting to progress, I remembered, and also took a quick glance at the types of events we could attend and saw that it said we could attend a religious service. I quickly looked up services in my area for the next day and came across a website called “WON Buddhism of North Carolina”. It peaked my interest and I found out that a service was going on the next day in Chapel Hill, NC which is fairly close to me since I reside at home. She talked to us about everyday things, she included things like life choices along with politics, and how we should face them by using the essential Dharmas. The discussion ended up being really heartfelt and it was truly inspiring, it was as if the words she said about how one should live their life was something that the people in that room were waiting to hear, including myself. The end of the discussion was actually the end of the service, but outside of the room people could stay and chat while drinking tea. Over tea, I briefly interviewed a girl named Laura (she was not comfortable disclosing her last name) that was sitting next to me during the service. I first asked her why she came to these Buddhist meditation services, to which she responded that she had been coming for a few years now, she felt it was a way to disconnect with the rest of the world and relax. I then asked her how she found out about this temple that was located in Chapel Hill. She responded saying that one of her good friends actually told her about it and even though she missed a few sessions these past two or so years, that she has been coming ever since. I then concluded the interview by asking if she knew if this type of Buddhist meditation was traditional since she seemed fond of it, in which she then responded that she only knew and practiced the type of mediation offered at the Won temple so she didn’t really

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

My Visit to Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha I decided to take a trip to the Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha to study Buddhism for my religion experiential essay. On August 4, 2016 I found myself in a setting in which I never would have thought I would see because I was raised a Christian Baptist who was once taught that her religion was the only true and accurate religion. As the time for the meditation and dharma talk approached, I began feeling nervous and excited to try something new. As I exited the bus I turned down Rosemont Avenue and searched for the temple, I was met by a beautiful and long path.…

Calvary Commission, the seminary that I stayed at, is located a few miles out of town on a land that seems to never end.
