Last semester I took the class Music 220, Selected Musical Cultures of the World, which introduced me to many diverse musical cultures, some of which I was familiar with, but many which I was not. These introduced me to many non-western elements which were variable from the western elements that I was used to. This class made me very open minded to new non-Western music, which I continuously listen to on various social media websites such as Twitter, Youtube, and Soundcloud. Also, last summer, I saw the Beyoncé: The Formation World Tour, which was one of the most wholesome and inclusive multimedia musical experience that I have ever encountered. This concert further reaffirmed the power that carefully chosen lyrics can have on how someone interprets and emotionally reacts to a piece of music. Music has provided me with a basis to express my emotions, not only through listening and viewing, but also through various performances such as learning flute and piano, and various types of choral music. These musical experiences provided me with a social bonding activity to bring me closer to the peers in my various friend groups and helped me through several difficult experiences through my life. Over time, my music taste has progressed from daily viewings of the children’s musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, to bands like Panic! At the Disco and pop music, with many other genres and choral music
